Tested a missle that failed soon after launch.

Seems that Pence was over the Pacific en route to S Korea.
North Korea attempted a missile launch Sunday morning local time (5:21pm ET), but it failed "almost immediately" United States military officials confirmed to NBC News.

South Korea's military detected the same results, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

The launch was attempted from Sinpo, a city on North Korea's east coast, some 400 miles from Japan, according to U.S. Pacific Command.

Early assessments suggested the projectile was not an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the continental U.S., two U.S. military officials told NBC News.

At some point I have to wonder if we (or Chinese, Japanese, someone...) is sabotaging them ala Stuxnet. But, maybe they are just that incompetent.

Doubtful.

North Korean missiles are based on very old technology, and they keep re-engineering that same tech with old materials technology. I spent some time a few years back with one of the experts on their missile programs and saw some pieces. We're talking 1950s technology, produced from scratch in 2005. It's like looking at pieces of the guts of something built in 1950 with crude, poorly machined components. They are good at producing new Scud missiles but that's about all they are, under the surface. Once you try to push the envelope on them they fail. They've advanced some since 2005, but not that much.

This is why I say I doubt very seriously we have the ability to "hack" these things- they are literally running off of vacuum tube tech.

Yeah, definitely figured that was a possibility. Just seems so sad they can't even get a 50s era missle launching successfully.

We need to just ignore them. This week's hysteria has been exactly what they want.

Ignoring them is certainly an option.

The problem with NK is that we are stuck in this paradigm cycle- we ignore the Kims, they beat the drum, we offer them food aid to not do it (and call it an "agreement"), the Kims go away for a while. Then when they are not being paid sufficient attention, they beat the drum again. Rinse, repeat.

Doing nothing and doing what we are currently doing are the two options we have to break that cycle.

I normally default to the do nothing stance, but given China's posture over the last couple weeks I'm a bit intrigued. They have sent some very clear messages to NK to knock it off. I say keep the carrier BG over there for a bit and see what shakes out.

IMO the best way to strike a blow to NK is to make the Kim regime look bad to the North Korean people.

I have no idea how you do that, though. There's probably something in the NK state media about how we're quivering with fear over dear leader's missile launch.

Basically, both Trump and Kim are going to walk away from the chessboard after only a couple of moves and declare checkmate. Both get to look like badasses in their respective countries.

And, it turns out that Trump's armada was 3500 miles away from North Korea last weekend.
As worries deepened last week about whether North Korea would conduct a missile test, the White House declared that ordering an American aircraft carrier into the Sea of Japan would send a powerful deterrent signal and give President Trump more options in responding to the North’s provocative behavior.

The problem was, the carrier, the Carl Vinson, and the four other warships in its strike force were at that very moment sailing in the opposite direction, to take part in joint exercises with the Australian Navy in the Indian Ocean, 3,500 miles southwest of the Korean Peninsula.

White House officials said on Tuesday they were relying on guidance from the Defense Department. Officials there described a glitch-ridden sequence of events, from a premature announcement of the deployment by the military’s Pacific Command to an erroneous explanation by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis — all of which perpetuated the false narrative that an American armada was racing toward the waters off North Korea.

As the White House was talking about sending a naval "armada" to the Korean Peninsula, the very ships in question were on their way to participate in military exercises in the Indian Ocean, some 3,500 miles in the opposite direction.

A senior administration official blamed a miscommunication between the Pentagon and the White House over reports that the aircraft carrier has not made its way to the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, as an expected show of force to North Korea.

The official blamed the mixup on a lack of follow-up with commanders overseeing the movements of the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier.

Entire U.S. Senate to go to White House for North Korea briefing

Top Trump administration officials will hold a rare briefing on Wednesday at the White House for the entire U.S. Senate on the situation in North Korea, senior Senate aides said on Monday.

All 100 senators have been asked to the White House for the briefing by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the aides said.

While top administration officials routinely travel to Capitol Hill to address members of Congress on foreign policy and national security matters, it is unusual for the entire 100-member Senate to go to such an event at the White House, and for those four top officials to be involved.

U.S. officials have expressed mounting concern over North Korea's nuclear and missile tests, and its threats to attack the United States and its Asian allies.

President Donald Trump criticized North Korea's "continued belligerence" and said its actions were destabilizing during a telephone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, the White House said.

The briefing will take place at 3 p.m. EDT.

House aides said they were working with the White House to set a similar briefing for members of the House of Representatives.
