I think his plan to use the money to pay down debt is smart, but if you won't be allowed to use it that way and you will have to pay it back, why would you deny it?

And I think you missed my point. He and everyone else knew his request would be denied. Unless he was willing to stand his ground which he did then there was no point in starting the fight in the first place. He was supposed to simply say, Hey Obama let me pay down the debt knowing full well the answer would be no and then simply say OK.

I don't think he promised Charlie anything. I think it was understood as a tradition of old SC politics that he would give Condon a bone, but Sanford is anything but a good old boy traditionalist. Condon on the other hand is the poster boy for that.

Secondly, Peeler had about three times the primary votes as Condon. In other words, if there was a political motivation to offer anyone a cabinet position it would have been to Peeler. The 2002 primary really wound up being a referendum on Condon, and he lost big time. Another thing to consider is that the non-scandal about the McCain push poll had not been resolved at that point, if my memory serves me correctly. It was unfortunate for Condon, but Sanford would have been a fool to offer before Condon had been cleared.

"unity" and "all members of party x should unite behind candidate y" is the kind of bs uttered by guys who value their careers and political futures... you make a deal, they tell your supporters you'll get a "seat at the table" in exchange for making sure your supporters will get out the vote.

The Gville news is reporting the return of our long lost governor this morning. I am going to guess that he is going to act bemused over the uproar and say something like the governor in this state has so little authority why would anyone be concerned about a 6 day absence.
