That's all well and good, but let's face it, nothing major gets done unless one party controls the WH and Congress. (Although the WH can pull some end runs with Executive Orders. Congress can't pull the same end runs.)
So you vote for a Prez that will push a certain agenda (and not veto certain Congressional actions), and you vote for Congressional candidates that will follow through with lawmaking that is to your liking.
There's nothing major that NEEDS to get done. I hope DC remains a discombobulated, fucked up, gridlocked cess pool so we can get on with our lives and not worry about them fucking it up some more.

GannonFan wrote:I don't think Trump has ever really had coattails for Republicans - people who voted for Trump voted for him because he was the middle finger to politics as usual - they didn't vote for Trump because they agreed with or loved the Republican party. On the contrary, Trump repeatedly and thoroughly dismissed the Republicans during the primaries and the general election. Heck, that's how a mouth-breather like JSO could get so hot and bothered that he actually became a huge Hillary supporter.

Long term, this is kinda neutral for the GOP and Dems. They now don't have to worry about how to handle Moore in the Senate if he had won the seat. There would've been pressure to censure or even refuse to seat Moore and there would've been ethics investigations well before he even got there. Now none of that happens. Franken is definitely gone now - no way can he back himself into office when even voters in Alabama voted not to send someone like Franken to the Senate. As for governing, 52-48 isn't very different from 51-49, especially with a handful of GOP Senators that were already retiring and were already running rouge from the party anyway. And there's only so much you can push through without needing 60 votes anyway. The GOP will get whatever tax bill they come up with, so that will happen. And after that, it will be business as usual in Washington, which means no business. Democrats have something like 25 Senate seats up for grabs versus a far lower number for the GOP. I think the Dems have a better chance of flipping the House than they do the Senate, and I don't think they flip that either. An election like this means that the GOP can run without regards to Trump - he's not winning races for them and he's just a GOP guy in name only - he's his own party. With no legislative things likely to happen, other than this tax bill, while Trump is on office, the only thing left is the SCOTUS, and if the GOP holds on to 50 seats (Pence tiebreak) they can put on whomever they want.

I don't see that anything has changed - a really divided electorate is still going to be very divided for quite awhile.
Yep, as far as stuff likely to come up Jan-Dec 2018, 51-49 instead of 52-48 doesn't hurt conks much.

Nov 2018 23 donks seats up, 8 conk seats, and 2 independents (Vermont and Maine) that caucus with donks. So yeah basically 25 donk seats and 8 conk seats. Losing last night I don't think it makes it more likely they'll lose the Senate even with 1 less senate seat. If Moore had won he would have been a huge albatross as far as being seated, and donks would have had a year to beat conks over the head with Moore. Without Moore could very well be the case that conks don't lose one of those 8 conk seats they would have lost with the Moore albatross, and/or gain 1 of those 25 donk seats that they wouldn't have gained with the Moore albatross.

Yep, which wouldn't have passed if the donks didn't have that brief super majority in the Senate..

Well, the only way you don't have gridlock is when you have one party controlling the WH and congress, with a supermajority in the Senate. And I assume you don't want that?

I believe the market likes gridlock- doesn't it do better in years when Congress is controlled by one party (or at least one house) and the WH by the other party?

I find it surprising that your world has not been affected by certain policies of the prior administration. It certainly had an impact on my world. I see the unwinding of some of these things, including taking action where no action was taken, as a need. Just my opinion.

I was hoping Moore would win. The more crazy populists get into national office, the closer we get to maybe changing the primary system so we don't have the most fanatical partisans on both sides picking nominees.

Or maybe even (dare I say it) eliminating the delusion that it's a great thing to have lots of malinformed people voting.

Everybody has to take an IQ test before getting their voter registration. I used to want to go with minimum IQ of 100...the average...to vote. Now I've decided only the cognitive elite should vote. That was defined by Hernstein and Murray as >115 for an IQ test with a 15 standard deviation.

That way I know we'd never again get an absurdity like Donald Trump being elected President. And I'm pretty confident that all of us who frequent this board would still get to vote.

That was a close election. The black vote put Jones over. Or maybe the gay vote. I wonder how many votes the Alabama Libertarian got.
