If you don't see the connotation between calling a black person an ape and the historical racist imagery involved, I don't know what to tell you. It's imagery specifically made to dehumanize an entire race of people over multiple generations and it's still used today. Roseanne's comment is particularly bad because it directly attributes Valerie Jarrett's existence to an an Ape (and Muslim Brotherhood).

I'd argue that it's not vulgarity - calling a woman what she called her is pretty much as demeaning to women as a gender (or sex? Can't keep all that straight anymore) as racism is to minorities. Keith Olberman using the f-word when talking about Trump is vulgarity, that's mild stuff. Calling her the c-word, well, that's far more that just being vulgar.

It varies with culture. Some cultures are offended by the word "cunt, some cultures are offended by schoolchildren being slaughtered with assault weapons in their classrooms. Its a relativity thing.
