Are We Ready for Robo Umps in Baseball?
Is it time to embrace the future and have computers call balls and strikes in baseball. The Atlantic League is experimenting with it now. The computers would be more consistent for sure. The umps wear an ear piece and still makes the call once the pitch is called upstairs. What you all think?

I'm not a die-hard baseball fan, so I'm for it. Simply too many inconsistent calls that can completely change a game. 2-1 pitch that gets called a strike when it's completely out of the zone.... that's a game changer.

Totally concur, computer does better on balls and strikes. This would also cut down on dugout chirping over balls and strikes.

Yup.
IF it is a strike it's a strike. None of this pitch-framing BS, or playing favorites.

Too bad the Patriots don't play baseball. They'd have that shit hacked before the season started.

I like the idea. But why do they still need the umpire behind home plate with an earpiece?

Re: Are We Ready for Robo Umps in Baseball?
Serious question. The plate width is fixed. The markers for the top and bottom of the zone vary by batter. Is there a person in a booth somewhere setting the upper and lower limit at the beginning of each at bat or is there an algorithm in the computer to set them? I could see where a human could be accused of bias.

That ump does lots more than call/track balls and strikes.Ivytalk wrote:I like the idea. But why do they still need the umpire behind home plate with an earpiece?

Scoring plays at the plate
sweeping off the plate
jawing with the catcher
breaking up get-togethers on the mound
taking shots to the biscuits on passed balls
arguing with the manager
Who's gonna do all that stuff?

Foul ball calls.
Time out calls by the catcher or batter.
Foul tips.
Another angle for balks calls.
Home plate umpire has foul calls between home and first/third bases.
Catcher interference.
Batter interference.
I am for the computer but ONLY IF they have the ability to correctly adjust the strike zone vertically for each batter. Jose Altuve and Aaron Judge do not have the same sized strike zones. The boxes you see on TV never change.

What do we do if it's not calibrated right?

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I like the human error aspect in football and baseball. I didnt want replay and they have proved they failed at that, this would be no different.
If human umps were good enough for 150 years why change now, it's part of the game.
Only way I am for this is if Pete Rose programs the computers.

They are absolutely NOT part of the game - they fancy themselves judge jury and executioner
and the sooner they are completely removed form ANY sport the better
They can be used to spot the ball in the NFL and or sweep off home plate in MLB
beyond that they are worthless...
it's already been shown that the average MLB .300 hitter knows the strike zone better than the umps

In 2018, umpires made 34,294 incorrect ball and strike calls. That’s 14 per game...ALPHAGRIZ1 wrote:You have more than your fair share of really stupid posts but this one might be your mona lisaChizzang wrote:

many in game changing scenarios
Presently MLB umpires are correct 58% of the time on bang bang plays at first base
75% correct would be shitty by any measurement but acceptably shitty
and they are a long ways away from 75%
