A billionaire celebrity that EVERYONE knows (even before he was President)....isn't going to be beat in this celebrity obsessed country. Trump's second term will not be a honeymoon though. The economy is bound to slow and his inner circle will begin to peel off as they consider their futures A.T. (After Trump). We just need to get used to wild swings in extremism in this country because everyone wants everything. The most fascinating thing to watch will be the Republican Party once Trump goes away. I can't imagine how and who sells their party and positions to the American people 5 years from now.

I think Mueller did fine today. Of course the information is the same. We already knew that there were interactions between the Trump campaign and Russia. We already knew Trump obstructed Justice but there was no charging analysis because Trump is President and the DOJ has taken the position that a sitting President can't be indicted.

About the only thing new we learned is that Trump provided dishonest answers in his written responses.

The guy came off as a doddering old fool who neither wrote nor read his own report. He took down the entire Dem party today and showed the process to be a complete sham.

But yea, other than that? Fine...

I didn’t get that. Mueller confirmed his report and refused to engage in political bickering. The only thing that “hurt” was him saying on the record that his report doesn’t exonerate Trump.

In a way, a special prosecutor’s report cannot really exonerate a President. Not even a non-conviction in the Senate on impeachment can do that - because impeachment is political. The only way Trump can be “exonerated” would be to have him charged with a crime and then either be acquitted or dismissed.

A SP’s report can go one way or the other. In the case of this report, it presents facts that suggest that Trump and his campaign did not conspire with Russians to throw the elections. It did suggest that Trump obstructed justice. My preference would have been that Mueller would have stated clearly that the facts support a charge or not. But he did not do that, unfortunately.

But here’s the rub - absent an underlying proven crime, no court is going to convict him on obstruction. No prosecutor would bring that charge against an ordinary citizen given the fact pattern in this case. And any prosecutor who brings that charge in this case will be doing so because of political motivations.

When Trump leaves office, his GOP successor will pardon him a la Gerald Ford. His Dem successor will have a tougher go of it but I suspect he will still not face charges. And if Trump wins a second term, the statute of limitations will run out on obstruction. That is how this is going to play out.

You couldn't have watched the whole thing. He was eviscerated on multiple occasions by R questioning. He was stumbling, bumbling, didn't know what the report contained, made statements that contradicted what was in the report, made statements later that contradicted statements made earlier, etc., etc. He looked old, tired and like he didn't want to be there. It's plainly obvious he didn't WRITE the report, didn't know what was IN the report, and couldn't speak TO the report.

The Dems haven't learned anything - they keep playing the game that Trump owns. Trump sets the tone, he sets the topics, he dominates the room with his bluster and bombast, and the Dems simply try to respond in that arena. And just like the GOP stalwarts that faded in those primaries back in 2016, the same thing is happening to the Dems now - the air is sucked out of the room and everything is Trump. Granted, having the economy rolling along and nothing terrible happening in the world is a huge boon for Trump and something that could make him too tough to beat come 2020, but the Dems do themselves no favors by playing his game his way. Days like today just confirm that. Impeaching a sitting President on relatively flimsy charges basically within a year of the next election is idiocy and Pelosi, for a change, appears to understand the political ramifications of that and has made the right call in terms of stopping that movement. But the Dems need to find a way to not let Trump dominate every waking moment if they're going to unseat him in 2020. So far they aren't doing it.

I didn’t watch it all. But I saw some of it, read analysis from the R and L. Listened to Sean Hannity bloviate. Listened to CNN lament how it wasn’t a slam dunk.

Yep. Mueller was hurt by a lot more than by saying on the record his report didn’t exonerate Trump. He was the face of the investigation, but clearly wasn’t running the show, at least when it came to the report. He must have checked out early before it was even written.

That was moderately funny, but I shared a post on FB a couple weeks back — maybe by Arthur Brooks — making the point that everyone’s professional and life skills start to decline at some point, and we need to develop other interests and cope as best we can. The legal profession may be the worst at handling this: for a “gladiator” litigator, any hint of weakness is deflected or denied. Hell, by the time I retired, I knew my best years were behind me. Delaware is full of once-excellent old lawyers who are shadows of their former professional selves but don’t know when or how to quit. Mueller may be going through the same thing. I actually felt sorry for the guy.
