While not American, Greta has this right. She understands it's one of the most noble pursuits and professions in history, and that there's a reason we listen to them when they sound alarms. Her future is at stake.

Instead though (in 21st century American nonetheless), we have idiots thinking their five-minutes of watching Youtube and ten-minutes of internet research qualify them as more "woke" than someone who has studied, researched, and written academic papers for 8+ years.

WTF is the point of educating people if society doesn't enjoy the fruits of its investment once the educated are proficient in the subject matter they learned? Hell, what's the point of a functioning society if no one is ever going to trust that others know what they're doing.

Science is peer-reviewed; when 99% of scientists agree on something, I'm f*cking listening.

You know, I had a long post typed that basically amounts to this - You're being emotional. You don't understand the history or the facts.

Btw, your article links to Baby Boomers. We're talking about their parents. :coffee: Also, that article is pretty much a Baby Boomer slapping himself on the back. Did you even READ it, or did you just google a stat, quote it and post the link?

Yes the industrial age was probably the worst for CO2 but that wasn't because of individuals or their families. People who grew up during the Depression were very frugal and conservationist - they recycled more than Millennials or Xers could dream of.

If you're going to compare the US to China based on per capita output let's subtract the Chinese people who are living in 3rd world conditions and use per capita based on the number of people living a 1st World standard of living. The damage to the environment and pollution in China is incredible and I'm guessing that they influence the testing to hide the actual damage.

As far as those "f*ckers" go, I think you're confusing the Boomers with the Greatest Generation. For someone who blames old people for the world's problems you're kind of ignorant of the differences between the generations. How much electronic crap is filling our landfills because Millennials have to had to have the latest and greatest since they were children? As I've stated Millenials and Boomers have a lot in common so it's funny to see you b!tch about them.

A huge part of the reason this country has accomplished what it has is individual freedom and responsibility and you want to throw a system that has achieved generations of success for one that will provide a single generation of equality following by generations of mediocrity and decay.

I don't blame the GG during the industrial era...they didn't understand how CO2 and pollution affected the larger world around them, and they didn't have as much political clout yet. While scientists back then were sounding alarms as well, that information didn't get to the population as efficiently.

But to say the GG didn't contribute to the environmental issues is not true; they contributed the most. They held political power for years after WWII. And they, along with the Boomers, overlapped in many of the years that were the worse for the US in terms of environmental effects. It's not like the GG only lived to the 40s and died off. They were as much part of the growth in consumerism and heavy-energy use post-WWII.

You do realize that the Greatest Generation were children/young adults on the tail end of the Industrial Age, right? We all contribute. You just think your generation is as pure as the driven snow

Using per capita measurement of CO2 is nothing more than a way to cover for China's increasing CO2. Per capita is irrelevant. If you truly believe that CO2 is the driver then total tons is what needs to be looked at.

China’s Red Guards were generally teenagers (and off limits to criticisms according to the tut tut brigades here)

so maybe this is more appropriate:

“There is no "unassailable science" that tells us how the future looks: what technologies humans will devise, how they will adapt. One imagines a magazine such as Time, which once published pieces about now-discredited predictions of a "population bomb" and global cooling, might understand that the future is always more complicated than we imagine.”

But 90% of the “attacks” on her aren’t attacks at all - it is dissent against what she is espousing being characterized as attacks. THAT is her utility to these groups- that’s why she is the face of this movement and not some Norwegian college student soyboy.

So although she is being victimized by both her handlers as well as her opponents, I completely reject any attempts to shift the argument away by making her the focus- the Climate Strike manifesto demands need to be front and center, in full daylight

Therefore my response to anybody clutching their pearls over bad things being said about Thunberg is to dismiss them with prejudice. I’m not rewarding deflection by people whose intent is to stifle dissent by using disabled teenagers.

I didn't say your daughter would be a puppet for a neo-Maoist.

I see plenty of dissent with her politics. That's fine and reasonable. I'm talking about those that are ignoring that and are attacking her based on her sex, age, disability, appearance and even nationality. As if all that crap matters. It's all deflection.

That's my position - go after the handlers and the topic. Otherwise, those attacking her for all those other things are no better than the liberals attacking Trump over his orange skin and fat ass. Or Melania's accent. Or Michelle Obama's weight.

My parents were greener than any of you scolds.
Yup. Those people had to go through a depression then a world war. 10+ years of scarcity and rationing will have a monumental impact on a population.
My Mom grew up on a homestead in north central Saskatchewan. No running water or electricity. The nearest town was 10 miles away and an all day trip by wagon. I always got tangerines in my Christmas stocking because they were like treasure up there the few times the general store would have some. Her teenage brother killed a moose one winter which got the family through to spring. Her mom sewed wheat sacks together for swimming suits.

She was very successful in life but despite her wealth insisted on chopping her own kindling which she’d gather from the beach and relying upon a wood burning stove for heat. Baseboard was useless waste. Made maybe 4 trips to the dump per year and recycled, burned, composted, the rest. Food scraps were thrown over the bank to feed the raccoons.

Rarely bought anything fancy or new but was greener and had a smaller carbon footprint than most of the so-called modern day environmentalists.

One of her few guilty pleasures was a tv and laptop so she could stream EWU games.

Born in 1933 so kind of between the GG and Boomers I guess.
