DEARBORN, Michigan (AP) -- Helped by a lightened debt load, Ford Motor Co. posted a surprise second-quarter profit of $2.3 billion Thursday, following the worst loss in company history a year earlier. Shares rose 8 percent in morning trading.

Please, long term Ford fans, bear with me here. I have been hearing that they are starting to build some seriously good quality and efficient vehicles, is there real proof of this?

The last time I drove a new Ford was in '89 when I went SUV shopping, it was an explorer and I thought it was a junk pile. Ended up getting a GMC Suburban SLE for the same money.

I am not, and have never been a Ford fan, but if they are actually building Toyota/Honda quality vehicles now, I will go try a few out.

Seeing the need for a new set of wheels within the next 12 months, my last four have been Toyotas.

I actually don't really like Fords. I have driven all of those cars, and put quite a few miles on each of those cars (Escape to Shelbyville, KY and back to CF), Fusion I've probably put about 1000 miles on, the Focus I drove around Kentucky for 4 days (about 500 miles), and I drove my buddies F-150 while Sara and I moved into our house, and we have towed a camper from Waterloo to Cadott, WI with it.

I currently drive a Buick Century, and before that a Chevy Cupris Cutlass from 1982. I've also driven a couple Saturns, a couple Toyota's, a couple other Fords, some Kia's, GMC, Chevy's, Dodges...you name it (other than the high end vehicles) and I've probably driven it, and I love the Fusion and the Escape more than any car I've driven

Hmm, I would think resale is an indication of quality. I know I consider it when buying, and has a lot to do with why we have bought Toyota the last four times. Pay a couple thousand more up front, have much less trouble, and the thing is still worth a couple thousand dollars when it's 15 years old. My daughter is driving our old '91 camry, it has almost two hundred thousand miles on it, has only needed regular maintenance, and it is still worth $3,000. What if we'd bought a Taurus!

I'm happy to see this. I'm really leaning towards a loaded Escape Limited when my Land Rover lease is up in October. I've priced out a full loaded Escape Limited V6 AWD with every bell and whistle you can imagine (except the built-in navigation system - I'm done with DVD-based systems) and I should be able to get it for under $30,000.

Where were you when GM was building cars like the Cadillac Cimarron or the Pontiac Aztec?

BTW- I currently own a F-150. It is a 2002 model. Prior to that, a Mercury Cougar, and before that a Ford Ranger. The Cougar was ho hum but those two trucks were the best vehicles I have ever seen. My F-150 has had nothing other than routine maintenance and still runs like new.

Back in 1992 I drove my 1984 Ranger (4 cylinder 5-speed) to Fayetteville AR from Charleston to see the Arkansas/The Citadel football game. On Sunday after the game, I stopped in a gas station to fill up and check the oil for the trip home. The oil was about a half quart low, so I added some, closed the hood and headed off for the 1000 miles trip back to Chucktown. When I got to Chattanooga and made that big uphill climb, my temperature gauge started to top out. I stopped the truck and looked under the hood. I had forgotten to put the oil cap back on, and all the oil in the engine had blown out all over the underside of the hood. I put the cap on, turned the truck around, and coasted in neutral back down the mountain to a gas station. I filled it up with oil (turns out I only had a half-quart in the engine) and drove off. The temp gauge went right down, and there was no apparent damage to the engine. I had driven about 600 miles, more than half of which were without hardly any oil. At the time, the truck had about 110,000 miles on it. A couple years later I sold it to an old man back home in NC who I used to coon hunt with. He bought it from me for $500 and drove it until he died a few years ago. His son now drives it and it has somewhere around 350,000 miles on it. Still runs like a top. If the damn thing had air conditioning I would probably still have it.

Was that one a good or bad one? Seems most Cadys I've been in are as advertised, damn comfortable and damn powerful. Just never could see parting with the kind of coin it takes to buy one. Out here, if you spend over 30K for a vehicle, it better damn well be a four wheel drive pick up.

I love the Camry for dependability and economy for sure, but am thinking of something a little more comfortable this next time.
