Yup ... that first foot was in the grave 50 years ago.

I was always a big fan - saw him at PB Scott's. He was engaging and a 'hoot' (that image, I think, was a head shot from the late 70's). A few years later at G-Boro's Aycock Auditorium he fell off his stool before his first song and was helped off the stage (he 'canceled' )

He got up that morning, put on his slippers, walked out to his kitchen and died.

now how the hell can a person go to work in the morning, come home in the evening, and have nothing to say?

Saw him about ten years agou at the Paducah Opera House and he still had it. Best part is we were hanging around outside afterwards when he was leaving. He pulls out in a non-descript sedan and gives us a big smile and wave as he drove by and as we're watching him drive past we see the end of a fishing pole sticking out the rear window. Nobody captures the way Americans use English like John Prine did.

My understanding is they hooked a truck to it, and moved it 50- 60-feet across the parking lot Built a shed roof on one side (next to the 'By-Pass'), and then built the big wing back toward Twigs -- before they tore the thing down.



Doc did not approve of drinkin' but they set him up That's Merle to the left. Merle got his drink on at the Grubstake, too -- that's where The Woodlands BBQ is now. I can't remember much from back then ... and I played softball for The Woodlands until 2000 or so.

I hope things are well with the 'S' Family -- are they still around? The PB's Reunion might be on life support. Last year might have been the finale. Bart sold Canyon's, and I think Randy Kelly got the Cancer (he booked the Acts).

I ... dug the big Holley's sign out of the trash when David tossed it 25+ years ago I passed it on to a woman in HP in hopes she would look after it for me.

I was born in HP but 'summered' in B-Rock before moving to Watagua. Bar-tended at Holley's (for David Cox!) at Appalachian, drank at Clyde's...the Grubstake...the Library Club , and upon advice of my attorney choose not to answer any other questions

I didn't know Clyde's was PB's, I started at App in '81. I ate many a garbage burger there though. Holley's was a regular stop as well and I fuzzily remember the Library Club. Maybe just from visiting prior to attending. No recollection of the Grubstake. If you got into Boone regularly, I worked at Sollecito's for about a decade while sometimes going to school. I may try and hit the PB's reunion this year. I think they have the Spongetones and Brice Street lined up. Fits well with both my Greensboro and Boone days.

Okay, Woodlands was there when I first dropped in, so that is answered. Donna Sollecito is still in Boone. I think she's the last of the family there. Mike and Mary have both passed. The PB's reunion may still happen. If it does I'll let you know. I haven't gone in past years, and may not this year either. Seems like a good time though.

Although I definitely knew his name, I couldn't have told you a single song of his until his death. He's talented, and I don't doubt he has plenty of genuine fans, but to me he's more like an AFI list of movies. You're a neophyte if you don't pretend to have loved him.

I would think that many people would recognize "Angel From Montgomery" because of the Bonnie Raitt cover of the song. Maybe not though, everyone has different tastes in music. I got exposed through older siblings and friends, and then moving to an old hippie town for college. I think 88 has a good point concerning artists who covered his songs. I was thinking along the lines of artists he has influenced. Those above of course, but also current artists like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, etc. Even Steve Earle to an extent, although Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark apparently mentored him more.

And you've probably heard some that you didn't know were his. I learned of him by chance and several decades later moved near where he grew up and his name is widely known so I'm more up on him than other songwriters that you're supposed to know about. Like Townes Van Zandt - i listened to tons of Jerry Jeff Walker and Bobby Bare and Guy Clark before I ever heard his name, and when I did it seemed like I always preferred somebody else's cover of his somgs like how some people are with Dylan.

The one that I never knew and surprised me when I found out was David Allen Coe's You Never Even Called Me By My Name.

I always knew Steve Goodman wrote it. Coe even mentions that while singing the song. Just found out John Prine was a co-composer.

I did the Taste Buds, was a commander in the sacking of PB's by the Boone Liberation Organization, and a disciple of The Swami (and leader of the internal chants at the Party Out of Bounds). I actually enjoyed the whole-wheat deep-dish, and secretly lusted for Emma (and Betty Jo)

Hartford was the tip of the spear in 'Newgrass' -- had a Stomping Board that tore down the G-Boro Coliseum I'm thankful that Stomping Board didn't take down the PB's dome - it was quite a thumper. He played solo a lot -- a crowd pleaser, banjo & fiddler player, and had what I think was a wireless pick-up as he danced through the audience with his fiddle.
