I have thought this through. He needs to come out and say something. Even Obama had the integrity to speak to the nation even when he knew there was a large part of the country was going to ignore or not care. It's a sign of leadership. He's cowering like a little bitch.
OK. Tell me how you see the reaction of a great speech will go.
He's the POTUS and it's his job regardless of whether it will be well received or not. He's shirking responsibility by not doing it.

That's your excuse for the complete absence of leadership? We didn't see Obama cowering in his bunker when they were burning and lynching him in effigy. :ohno:
It's not an excuse. I think every POTUS should address the nation at a time like this. I just don't think it will amount to anything so I'm not crying over the fact that he hasn't done anything yet.
I'm not crying that our leader hasn't done anything other than tweet aka add fuel to the fire. I'm troubled by it.

OK. Tell me how you see the reaction of a great speech will go.
1) I didn't say great speech
2) Republicans will praise his leadership
3) Democrats will say it's not enough, tone deaf, too late, etc..
4) People rioting and looting won't hear it

But that isn't the point. The point is that you were elected to lead. If every speech was qualified by whether or not it'd be heard or well received then hardly any presidents will give addresses. Trump has nothing to lose if he comes out and gives a measured, heartfelt response. Well, it's too late now. He should've done it days ago.
I know you didn't say "great speech". I was trying to see the scenario for the best case. And you are probably right in what would come of it (2, 3, and 4). And what does it solve?

I 'm not sure it has to solve anything. It won't. Even if we had a leader that was supported by a majority of people, it wouldn't solve anything. But to be the leader means that you don't always have the ability to solve problems. Leadership is much more than just heading a government. Leaders should be inspiring. That's what leaders do. They get you excited with their speech. Or they make you feel safe, comforted, validated with their speech.

But you don't know if a speech made, showing people that their pain, anger, grief is recognized and valid can help to ease some of that pain. The speech is only the beginning. It would have to be followed up with action.

I understand there's some naivete in my post but shouldn't we demand that any leader of any party speak to us instead of lobbing insults via Twitter or just flat out ignoring it?

This is from his speech from the launch:
I want to say a few words about the situation in Minnesota. The death of George Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis was a grave tragedy. It should never have happened. It has filled Americans all over the country with horror, anger and grief. Yesterday, I spoke to George’s family and expressed the sorrow of our entire nation for their loss. I stand before you as a friend and ally to every American seeking justice and peace and I stand before you in firm opposition to anyone exploiting this tragedy to loot, rob, attack and menace. Healing, not hatred, justice, not chaos, are the mission at hand.

The police officers involved in this incident have been fired from their jobs. One officer has already been arrested and charged with murder. State and federal authorities are carrying out an investigation to see what further charges may be warranted, including against sadly, the other three. In addition, my administration has opened a civil rights investigation and I have asked the Attorney General and the Justice Department to expedite it. I understand the pain that people are feeling. We support the right of peaceful protestors and we hear their pleas, but what we are now seeing on the streets of our cities has nothing to do with justice or with peace. The memory of George Floyd is being dishonored by rioters, looters and anarchists. The violence and vandalism is being led by Antifa and other radical left wing groups who are terrorizing the innocent, destroying jobs, hurting businesses and burning down buildings.

The main victims of this horrible, horrible situations are the citizens who live in these once lovely communities. The mobs are devastating the life’s work of good people and destroying their dream. Right now, America needs creation, not destruction, cooperation, not contempt, security, not anarchy and there will be no anarchy. Civilization must be cherished, defended, and protected. The voices of law abiding citizens must be heard and heard very loudly. We cannot and must not allow a small group of criminals and vandals to wreck our cities and lay waste to our communities. We must defend the rights of every citizen to live without violence, prejudice, or fear. We support the overwhelming majority of police officers who are incredible in every way and devoted public servants. They keep our city safe, protect our communities from gangs and drugs and risk their own lives for us every day.

No one is more upset than fellow law enforcement offices by this small handful who failed to abide by their oath to serve and protect. My administration will stop mob violence and we’ll stop it cold. It does not serve the interest of justice or any citizen of any race, color, or creed for the government to give into anarchy, abandoned police precincts, or allow communities to be burned to the ground, won’t happen. Those making excuses or justifications for violence are not helping the downtrodden, but delivering new anguish and new pain. From day one of my administration, we’ve made it a top priority to build up distressed communities and revitalize our crumbling inner cities. We fought hard with Senator Tim Scott ___ and many others to create opportunity zones, helping to draw a surge of new investment to the places in our country that need it most.

We must all work together as a society to expand opportunity and to create a future of greater dignity and promise for all of our people. We must forge a partnership with community leaders, local law enforcement and the faith community to restore hope. Radical left criminals, thugs, and others all throughout our country and throughout the world, will not be allowed to set communities ablaze. We won’t let it happen. It harms those who have the least, and we will be protecting those who have the least. The leadership of the National Guard and the Department of Justice are now in close communication with state and city officials in Minnesota and we’re coordinating our efforts with local law enforcement all across our nation. In America, justice is never achieved at the hands of an angry mob. I will not allow angry mobs to dominate, won’t happen. It is essential that we protect the crown jewel of American democracy, the rule of law and our independent system of justice.

Every citizen in every community has the right to be safe in their workplace, safe in their homes and safe in our city streets. This is the sacred right of all Americans that I am totally determined to defend and will defend. My administration will always stand against violence, mayhem and disorder. We will stand with the family of George Floyd, with the peaceful protestors and with every law abiding citizen who wants decency, civility, safety, and security. We are working toward a more just society, but that means building up, not tearing down.

But that means building up, not tearing down, joining hands, not hurling fests, standing in solidarity, not surrendering to hostility. Moments ago as we went and just the launch of two great American astronauts into space, we were filled with the sense of pride and unity that brings us together as Americans. That same spirit, which powered our astronauts to the moon has also helped lift our country to ever greater heights of justice and opportunity throughout our history. So today, as we mark a renewed commitment to America’s future in space, a tremendous commitment it is. Let us also commit to a brighter future for all of our citizens right here on earth. When Americans are united, there is nothing we cannot do. From day one of my administration, we put America first.

Was that an address to the nation? No, it was before the launch. Giving a speech about something as serious as this, when nobody is hardly watching or even knew that the POTUS was going to address the issue is as good as giving it in an empty room.

10M people, world wide, watched the launch. I didn't even know POTUS was speaking and i'm usually the idiot that'll tune in when POTUS is giving an address or major speech. The space launch wasn't the venue for an address to the nation about this. This is important and deserves to be widely broadcast, promoted in advance so that everyone can see it, hear what he has to say and at least TRY to feel that the Gov't will do something.

Again...it's about leadership and Trump has zero talent in that arena.

I get it. But I'm a bottom line person. That isn't a terrible speech. And it's not uncommon for Presidents to address other issues at an unrelated pre-arranged event. But when does he give the speech? At night when the protestors are out protesting? And what would come of it? It would just provide an opportunity for the MSM to pick at his words which would likely incite more unlawful acts.

I understand that, but you have something very important going on and you choose to speak about it during a speech on something different that not even CNN covered (the speech, not the launch)? For a man who claims to be a media genius, he's doing a poor job.

Bottom line - Trump needs to be the leader of the UNITED States, step up and address us. The people rioting aren't tuning in anyway. It's the rest of us that want to see something. Cater to the majority that want to see action. Not the minority that aren't going to tune in even if they were staying home.

Anecdotal Proof that his speech on Saturday failed - I've been looking for him to say something and I didn't even know was speaking before the launch. Someone like me, that's usually in tune w/ what is going on and wants to hear from our government wasn't aware he was going to say anything. He failed to get his message out.

Secret Service agents rushed President Donald Trump to a White House bunker on Friday night as hundreds of protesters gathered outside the executive mansion, some of them throwing rocks and tugging at police barricades.

It's not his job.

It's the local mayor, police, state reps and governors job. They are failing not Trump they need to be held accountable but they won't be. This is 100% on them

Unless you are being detained cops have ZERO reason to get ID from you and you don't have to do it. They need to quit violating people because they think they can and learn the fucking laws.

It's not an excuse. I think every POTUS should address the nation at a time like this. I just don't think it will amount to anything so I'm not crying over the fact that he hasn't done anything yet.
Trump should take this time to point fingers at all of the mayor's and governors failing at their jobs in each individual state. They are responsible for this not the white house

My take from last week. Police could not contain the numbers of rioters and looters, so the mayors called the Gov to bring in the National Guard. The NG was in town on Friday, but could were not ready until Saturday. Saturday and Sunday was mostly peaceful, with police and NG able to control attempts to riot and loot. St Paul Mayor is an up and coming politician in the DFL party, Justin Trudeau, I mean Frey from Minneapolis is still cleaning his dirty underwear. It just took too long to respond, next time bring the NG in earlier to help keep the peace, or have go bags ready, to leave for a few days until the Government can restore the peace.

Yep. At that point its time to start dropping protestors.
Protestors? You mean vandals right?
Yes. It obvious I was refering to the protestors literally attacking and beating on those 3 surrounded cops. Next time I‘ll make sure I‘ll preface it with ‘violent‘ or say rioters.

I see...well actually I DON'T see... Trump being a leader and trying to quell the violence. Where is he? Why hasn't he come out on TV and spoken to the country? Why hasn't he lifted a finger to settle everything down? He's not a leader. He's just a guy with a bunch of sycophants.

B/c he's a pussy.

It's not his job.

It's the local mayor, police, state reps and governors job. They are failing not Trump they need to be held accountable but they won't be. This is 100% on them

That's how I judge the % of MAGAts around here.....their love of lifted trucks with loud exhausts & monster tires knows no bounds. They love to be seen and heard....I fucking hate them.

:coffee:
Then move to some liberal enclave. There are plenty of them.

You sound like Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon. Think this through. Whatever he comes out and says will be twisted and destroyed by the media. And the people doing the damage won't listen anyway. Seriously, what's the point?
That's your excuse for the complete absence of leadership? We didn't see Obama cowering in his bunker when they were burning and lynching him in effigy. :ohno:
I must have missed the hundreds/thousands rioting outside the WH, smashing windows, burning cars and buildings, attacking police and the Secret Service, ripping down barricades, etc when Obama was in office.

He shouldn't have even needed a badge to get out of that situation.

The cops were trying to arrest him based on... nothing.
You know the whole story?
Of course he doesn‘t.
