Can anyone shed some light on this for me? It seems as if anything and everything is subject to leaks to the media. So, with that being said, how much information is "leaked" on purpose?
Any ideas on this one?

I am going to guess about 95%+. Leaks elicit early indicators of mood and potential reaction.SeattleGriz wrote:Can anyone shed some light on this for me? It seems as if anything and everything is subject to leaks to the media. So, with that being said, how much information is "leaked" on purpose?

That all sounds good to me, for how many times have you ever heard about a "leaker" getting busted?Cap'n Cat wrote:I am going to guess about 95%+. They are not so much "leaks" as they are "trial balloons".dbackjon wrote:Leaks are mostly from the top, IMHO - to gauge moods, etc.

Re: Sensitive Information Leaks to Press
In politics there are basically three kinds of leaks
1. the "oh shit" leak: where someone hits "reply all" or forwards something they aren't supposed to - this happens more than you'd think... the Minnesota Dems just did something like this recently sending a youtube video of a swearing granny in a release...
2. the "this needs to get out, but we can't just do a press release because of the nature of it" leak. this is a lot of the leaking in DC that gets done. a lot of this isn't leaked anymore, but handed to a blogger who does the "word on the wind is..." story.
3. the "i'm trying to undermine my boss" leak - some are for noble reasons, someone doing something unethical or what not... other times it's just a straight up backstab.
I'll say that most "leaks" are the "oh shit" or "needs to get out" type.
I've found leakers in operations i've been a part of... it wasn't pretty when i did. one guy i fired for contacting a reporter (not his job) so... he popped off to a blogger which led to a story, (and they never called us for a comment)... i ran in to him at fundraiser at a bar in town, gave him a good one to the gut and walked out... he never popped off again... (mostly because in MN anyway, that's not normally done and the people he was with were all shocked that someone actually hit someone else...)
