No Thumbprint, No Money...Bank Tells Armless Man

Post by Appaholic »

MIAMI (Reuters) – A bank in Florida refused to cash a check for an armless man because he could not provide a thumbprint.

"They looked at my prosthetic hands and the teller said, 'Well, obviously you can't give us a thumbprint'," Steve Valdez told CNN on Wednesday.

But he said the Bank of America Corp branch in downtown Tampa, Florida, still insisted on a thumbprint identification for him to cash a check drawn on his wife's account at the bank, even though he showed them two photo IDs.

How in the fuck these assholes think they can force you to give a fucking thrumbprint for YOUR money is way beyond me even if you have the ability to do so. I hope BOA dies a very painful death but I'm sure they won't. I will however enjoy myself a little if I live to see the day it happens.

While I realize it sucks, given the OFAC rules, and BSA and AML regulations we (as "bankers") must follow, we're not given much choice. I would think though, that common sense (here's a time where it actually makes SENSE, TTBF) would rule the day and an obvious exception could be made. :coffee:

WTF rules are you talking about? There's a rule that you must ask for a thumbprint now? I can see having a password and showing ID but you're telling me that a thumbprint is now needed? Fucking doing things online you don't go through this shit but when you show up in person it's a fucking hoop jumping contest to get your GD money?

It's becoming more and more commonplace as financial institutions try to find SOME way to stay ahead of the fraudsters. Many, MANY financial institutions require a thumbprint of a NON-ACCOUNT holder when cashing an "on-us" check like he was attempting to do.

That's all fine and dandy.......but like protecting us from terrorism, there comes a tipping point when you start going over the top and it's time to reign it in a bit. If they don't want our money then we can all stuff it in our mattress.......won't need a GD thumb print for that......and not even losing much $$$ since savings interest rates suck.

P.S. - I hope that B of A dies a horrible death as well.

One day I hope you fellas get a chance, just a small one, to deal with a bank regulator. If they had their way, we wouldn't let customers in the door because of the risks involved. :shake: :shake: :shake:

Can I add Wells Fargo to the list of places to die a horrible death? Why is it that they get pissed everytime I ask for MY cash in 20's instead of (20) 100 bills. It is my money that I am letting you keep I will take it how I want it & it is none of your fucking business why I deposit so many one dollar bills each month, stop asking me if I am a waiter. And for the 900th fucking time, no I do not want to sign up for a debit or ATM card & yes I am sure.

What kind of "risks"??? Actually asking for decent customer service and an interest rate that a homeless person couldn't live on?.......

How is it "risky" if I bring you a 20K deposit (other than the fact that you now think the money is yours)???

Other than obvious instances such as people with no thumbs,
I don't see what the big deal is about thumb prints.
But we've been over this before and I know how paranoid some of y'all are.

This is about on a par with that Burger King in the StL that threatened to call the cops on a church youth group because the adult leader's 6-month-old was barefoot.

Give me a blinking break.

I'm only paranoid because the stupid people really are out there. I guess the bank needed a thumb print so that they wouldn't confuse this man with all the other armless clients they deal with regularly.

You wouldn't believe the paperwork we have to do on that 20K deposit after you leave. And you may get a visit from the feds. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

edit: regarding the interest rates: we only pay what WE can get when we turn around and invest your funds into the market. It's called economics, Jeff.

Actually AZ that is changing as well. I have been a member of MFCU for 23 yrs. and I know the bank VP. I am in there a minimum of 3-4 times a week and I never had a problem with them up until the last year when they closed the old branch and opened a new one a few blocks away. Now it's like pulling teeth to get MY MONEY out of the bank. I also am an employee of a company that banks with them and go in to cash a paycheck every couple of weeks to cash it and get hassled because I don't open a personal account with them. I don't feel like opening a personal account as I already have a long standing business account but when somebody gives me a check in lieu of services and go in with the proper ID to cash the fucker I don't need to be hassled about opening another account with them. I'm getting sick of the shit. :shake:

Um...
Actually they send you a nice letter with not to subtle language about FBI investigations into money laundering and drug trafficing and that the routing number and account number need to be provided from the source bank and something about the maturity of the source account and then something about them suggesting in the future that you use bank checks instead of cash etc. etc. employment verification and work history etc. etc.
