I had this nice eloquent paragraph written, and then I re-read it... My goodness... I think I may becoming a conservative...

Please Please, dear Yahweh, let me stay in the middle of the road so that I may have a clear opinion.

A more bold solution and one I personally favor is a single-payer system. There seems to be little anger over Medicare among its recipients. A single-payer plan would be like a Medicare for all.
I'm sure the anger quotient will rise up when Medicare goes bankrupt sometime in the next decade. But of course we will forestall that bankruptcy by implementing the single-payer public system which will never go bankrupt because it can ration its' output to "deserving" members.

Don't worry. Ther Mayans predicted all of this. Fortunately, the world ends in 2012 and Medicare won't be bankrupt by then.

What would be more appropriate? Don't be so vague... "Something else" I have a feeling this is something looney like "armed revolt", "secession", "civil war", etc. But, what?
Libertariansim and original Constitutional intent would be more appropriate than what we have today. It's the only way all sides could live in peace.

Conks are a little dangerous, but donks are disastrously dangerous for the future of liberty, propserity and the country. If there is a depression there will be a major political realignment, probably back towards libertarianism and the original intent of the Constitution. That's the only thing that would save us from ourselves. Someting akin to original intent would be far more satisfactory than our current situation.

If there is no depression, we will probably continue to bounce back and forth politically between unsatisfactory donk and conk non-solutions, plunging the country deeper into debt, loss of liberty and permanent recession.

I couldn't help but notice that the doctor retired to Cashiers.

Apparently, he did not give enough of his money away to poor people if he can afford to retire to Cashiers.

Or in short....

You first, buddy.

We should all pitch in. FWIW, I do give to Food for the Poor and would be more than glad to help pay for a public option. We ARE our brother's keeper.

I give more money to charity than would EVER get to the needy through the taxes I pay. I don't have a problem with finding ways to extend health care to all. I just know that the government will fvck it up to the point that only about 5 cents out of every dollar I pay to the system will be worth a sh!t.

Our government, and by government I mean our representatives and senators have been committing larceny for decades. They hedge and borrow against social programs such as Social Security and Medicare to pay for useless sh!t like runway extensions in PA and bovine happiness studies in Iowa. That's why SS and Medicare are fvcked up and almost insolvent, and that is why government run health insurance would be fvcked from the first day.

I don't know where everybody gets their faith in Washington from.

Amen Cid, amen. I want to find a way for healthcare to be available to all as well but I sure don't think that it will be done well in Washington.

You are not my pastor. Do whatever you want as long as you pay for it.

If we as citizens are our brother's keeper - which we are not - then we have lots of things to insist that our brother do for themselves prior to allowing them to suckle the public tit.

Yeah I don't get the "brother's keeper" thing myself. I will help out those that I can but I have enough on my own plate to try and keep from suckling on the teet of others.

It's real simple. If we would all take care of ourselves then our "brothers" wouldn't have to worry about it. I have a reasonable expectation that others should focus on taking care of themselves rather than focusing on how I can take care of them.

Well said, Cid!

Here is an interesting relevant tidbit about the real status of healthcare in the U.S., from the Mises Institute. (mises.org)

"...It's a near-universal assumption of the healthcare debate that the current system is a market system and it is broken, and hence we should try a government system. The people who assume this aren't considering the last 100 years of healthcare policy. Government is deeply involved at all levels, from medical licensure and patents, to direct subsidies and provision, to employee mandates and insurance-pooling controls, at all levels.

It's been a steady path to medical serfdom all the way, under both parties, and this is precisely what accounts for most of the problems that people complain about. Meanwhile, the private dimensions of the healthcare system is what accounts for its merits.

So what are we doing? The very opposite of what we should be doing: more control instead of more freedom, more spending instead of less, more mandates instead of fewer. The logic of interventionism is taking over: problems are being addressed by more of what caused the problems. The sick patient is being given more poison with the claim that it is the cure...."

Yep...those usually referencing the "brother's keeper" BS are usually looking to be kept more than doing the keeping....
