Perhaps the most outrageous piece of propaganda in the Gingrich/Forstchen article is their statement that "Lincoln was the first president to invite and socially greet a delegation of African-Americans into the White House." They say this to give their readers the impression that Lincoln was enlightened on the issue of race. He was not. He was as much a white supremacist as any man alive. Moreover, the purpose of the White House meeting with the delegation of African-Americans was not to meet and greet, but to urge these men to lead by example and self-deport themselves to Liberia in West Africa. At this meeting Lincoln told the delegation of free black men that "You and we are different races. We have between us a broader difference than exists between almost any other two races . . . . This physical difference is a great disadvantage to us both . . . and affords a reason at least why we should be separated . . . . It is better for us both, therefore, to be separate." He then made his sales pitch for the men to deport themselves to Liberia, an offer that they wisely declined.

I disagree. Lots of important historians have different opinions on Lincoln. Some respect him and rate him as the greatest POTUS, some despise him. Both sides have done extensive research on him.

Ibanez, I agree 100% with the synopsis of Lincoln. However, it is only one portion of the story. Lincoln possibly had a change of heart after the failed Haiti strategy and also through his contact with Frederick Douglas.

I would suggest reading up on Frederick Douglas and his relationship with Lincoln. Lincoln had an ongoing dialogue with Douglas, and some of Lincoln's private remarks and writings late in his life suggest that he had softened his views as they pertained to blacks. Many historians attribute this to Douglas' influence on him, among other things. Also, when Lincoln approved and sanctioned the raising of black regiments, he knew full well that the only result of this would be full citizenship and the franchise. If Lincoln truly felt that there was no place for the black man in America, they never would have been allowed to fight. the Union did not need them to win.

BTW- I am no fan of Lincoln, I think he trampled on the Constitution in ways too numerous to count. Think of him as Bush and Obama all rolled into one and multiplied by 50.
