UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
Apparently you arent reading whats going on over on AGS. Sorry I offended you. Who are you again?
Im not sure the Standing Rock tribe is held to the standards of our democracy. In fact Im not sure how it works. What they do with their politics and their decisions is their business. To stand outside and criticize like an angry parent to a child is something I dont understand. Our own country is now ruling rather than governing. I see no diffenence in the Standing Rock leaders making decisions that may not be popular with everyone inside or outside their own country and the actions our own government has taken against the popular will. 1/3 does not a majority make and even it did how does that obligate anyone?

Dear Lord, We come before you and humbly ask you to grant our prayer for a veil of protection to be placed over Donald Trump. May your will be done. In Jesus name we pray. Amen
Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
Here is a little tidbit from Grand Forks that illustrates why your reasoning on the petition may be emotionally appealling to some but wrong headed:SloStang wrote: Sounds to me the members of the Sioux Nation want UND to keep the name. One of the two tribes let their members vote and it past by a large margin. The second tribe's tribal council voted no and did not take it to it's members. The members did not agree with the tribal council and put out a petition and got over 1,000 signatures to put the matter to a vote of the members. Shouldn't the people have their voices heard?
There are 2,900 people that dont get their way with the ballot and thats in Grand Forks a city that is outraged by the situation surrounding the Tribal petitions. There will be no challenge to Grand Forks’ new smoking ban in November.
Bar owners gathering signatures to petition the City Council for a referendum said they came up short on the 3,815 signatures needed, and Wednesday was the deadline to submit the signatures.
There were only about 2,900 after eliminating illegible signatures and signatures from people who live outside of town, according to Tony Kvasager and Mike McMenamy.
Is that disingenuous or what? Shouldn't the people have their voices heard?
Sounds like the Grand Forks City Council is afaid to let their members voices heard.

Here is a little more irony that should bring a chuckle to everyone:

They respect a cameras rights but fight the rights of an entire Indian Nation! The University of North Dakota has renamed its camera on the International Space Station, after a dispute with a rural company.

The story say that they came up short of the REQUIRED signatures for it to be put on the ballot. Also I would guess that there are more than 8,700 registered voters in Grand Forks so I would assume that it is far less than 1/3 of the voters. 1/3 of the Standing Rock memebers signed their petition. John (JBB), do you really want me to start posting all the articles about that mess of university you are associated with?
Do you want me to tell everyone about your former President who resigned immediately once he was busted for being a crook, about the audit that just came out about said crook and all his public money he was using, about your facility manager who resigned today amid all this fire, about the VP of Finance who had to resign due to this, about the Best Buy stolen goods situation with your football players, about Ojuri hanging out with Mr. Brownstone and Bohl covering it up for 3 months.
Oh, and this was all in the past 9 months.
Did I miss anything?

All the things you pointed out are well known and open to the public. NDSU will get through this just fine and continue to thrive. Thanks for your continued interest in North Dakota State University.

Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
So if the Standing Rock Tribe eventually votes and allows UND to use the name does that mean they'll get to keep it?
Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
I think you are missing Sioux's point. JBB runs here and to AGS like an excited little kid with anything that he finds that HE thinks will reflect badly on UND. He post more on threads about UND then he does thread about NDSU. It is getting very old.GraftonBison wrote:Sioux wrote:John (JBB), do you really want me to start posting all the articles about that mess of university you are associated with?

My god slostang, give it up. You are an overbearing bore.
You and a few others have forgotten this is a thread about UND and nickname. You are one side I am on the other. Talking about UND is expected on this thread. Heres what you say on AGS:
All of this because I disagreed with you. You are at the height of intolerance. Take a few more happy pills.
I'm siding with the Tribes on this one. I see you are siding with the great white masters.

JBB, you just can not stay away from anything UND.
And why are you so happy that the Standing Rock Tribal Council is trying to silence their tribe by not allowing them to voice their opinion by voting?

Please watch the personal attacks on me and my character.

Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
I do not have a dog in this fight and I am not on either side of the fight. I am curious why the standing rock tribal council is affraid to let their members vote. Maybe they have an agenda and they know that they their vote does not truely represent the members of their tribe who they are suppose to serve. If the members who obviously want their voices heard voted no then I would agree it is time to move on and for UND to look for a new name.
Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
Slostang:
Maybe you could tell me what the REQUIRED number of signatures are on the Standing Rock? 1/3 of the voters in the last tribal election signed the petition. Thats far less than 1/3 of the tribal members. Apples and oranges my friend. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. UND folks dont get it both ways. The peitions are meaningless for the tribes just as they are meaningless for the good folks in Grand Forks.

Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
One did not have the required amount of votes and it is spelled out. As far as I can tell there is not a REQUIRED amount of votes for the other, but I am sure 1/3 would more than meet it if it did. I am also sure if 1/3 of the registered voters in Grand Forks had signed the petition it would have far exceeded the REQUIRED amount. Do you care to argue that point?JBB wrote:Slostang:The story say that they came up short of the REQUIRED signatures for it to be put on the ballot. Re: UND to officially retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname
It was really nice living in this country before political correctness and everyone wanting their piece of the pie.
It's sports teams for God's sake - not a war
Here's my solutions
Get rid of
The Texas Rangers - they insult the real Texas Rangers (past and present)
Houston Astros - they insult astronauts
Dallas Cowboys - Cowboys everywhere have to be rolling in their graves with the way this team runs
Any team with a rebel mascot or confederate flag and the NY Yankees - overtones of a war - LONG ENDED!
(I'm sure folks can come up with others)
Let's just resign to teams named after flowers and trees and birds and animals that don't talk. It's getting ridiculous, really. If you're not disparaging a people...................
oh, forget it. And don't argue with me either, I'm just voicing an opinion.
