Im not sure the Standing Rock tribe is held to the standards of our democracy. In fact Im not sure how it works. What they do with their politics and their decisions is their business. To stand outside and criticize like an angry parent to a child is something I dont understand. Our own country is now ruling rather than governing. I see no diffenence in the Standing Rock leaders making decisions that may not be popular with everyone inside or outside their own country and the actions our own government has taken against the popular will. 1/3 does not a majority make and even it did how does that obligate anyone?

Sounds to me the members of the Sioux Nation want UND to keep the name. One of the two tribes let their members vote and it past by a large margin. The second tribe's tribal council voted no and did not take it to it's members. The members did not agree with the tribal council and put out a petition and got over 1,000 signatures to put the matter to a vote of the members. Shouldn't the people have their voices heard?

Here is a little tidbit from Grand Forks that illustrates why your reasoning on the petition may be emotionally appealling to some but wrong headed:

There will be no challenge to Grand Forks’ new smoking ban in November.

Bar owners gathering signatures to petition the City Council for a referendum said they came up short on the 3,815 signatures needed, and Wednesday was the deadline to submit the signatures.

There were only about 2,900 after eliminating illegible signatures and signatures from people who live outside of town, according to Tony Kvasager and Mike McMenamy.

There are 2,900 people that dont get their way with the ballot and thats in Grand Forks a city that is outraged by the situation surrounding the Tribal petitions.

Is that disingenuous or what? Shouldn't the people have their voices heard?

Sounds like the Grand Forks City Council is afaid to let their members voices heard.

They respect a cameras rights but fight the rights of an entire Indian Nation!

Also I would guess that there are more than 8,700 registered voters in Grand Forks so I would assume that it is far less than 1/3 of the voters. 1/3 of the Standing Rock memebers signed their petition. Apples and oranges my friend.

All the things you pointed out are well known and open to the public. NDSU will get through this just fine and continue to thrive. I do not have a dog in this fight and I am not on either side of the fight. I am curious why the standing rock tribal council is affraid to let their members vote. Maybe they have an agenda and they know that they their vote does not truely represent the members of their tribe who they are suppose to serve. If the members who obviously want their voices heard voted no then I would agree it is time to move on and for UND to look for a new name.

One did not have the required amount of votes and it is spelled out. As far as I can tell there is not a REQUIRED amount of votes for the other, but I am sure 1/3 would more than meet it if it did. I am also sure if 1/3 of the registered voters in Grand Forks had signed the petition it would have far exceeded the REQUIRED amount. Do you care to argue that point?

Any team with a rebel mascot or confederate flag and the NY Yankees - overtones of a war - LONG ENDED!
