Not trying to take anything away from this problem, as it is definitely something that urgently needs addressed by those in command....

but I have to wonder if the "record number" might partially be due to such things not being kept track of as closely in the past. War can have a terrible effect on the psyche of those involved in it, and I have to believe that soldiers in the past had these same struggles that those of today are facing. (though perhaps not as much continual redeployment and the like and forced "stop loss" reenlistments)

Unnecessary problems include a Commander in Chief who expends so much energy coddling the enemy and is afraid of naming the enemy. Another problem is a set of rules of engagement that favors the lives of enemy combatants over the lives of soldiers.

How many have adequate social support when they get home?
