It has nothing to do with intelligence. I was intelligent enough to finish chemical engineering at UD, but I was too fucking lazy. So, I switched to elementary ed, got the BS box checked, and became a military officer. :thumb:

That being said, the vast majority of education majors at UD were intelligent, dedicated people that were preparing for a career making a difference in kids' lives. And yeah, if they aren't happy with their salary, bennies, or work environment, the world always needs truck drivers and call center operators.

I started a thread on it many moons ago, when I first found out.

My (most recent) wife and I were sitting across from each other, dueling computers type of thing. She had seen an article on the Missoulian website about an old boyfriend of hers, and asked me if I'd ever googled MY ex, to see what had become of her. We'd divorced while in Florida, so I'd always assumed she'd remained there and worked her way up the educational ladder to some sort of position of authority.

I was right. I googled her name, and the first thing that came up was a story regarding her arrest and ultimate pleading guilty to grand theft.

What I failed to realize while married to her was that her uncontrollable desire for all the finer things in life would lead her to steal over $65,000 from the school petty cash fund while serving as Principal of a Middle School in central Florida.

She was a head case (to say the least), but I'd never pegged her for a criminal. Anyhoo, she's been married a couple times since me, and has dropped off the face of the earth. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Wow.

Kind of sounds like my wife, except for the fact that her thievery from my petty cash fund is completely legal.

Like all politicians Christie has his plusses and minuses.

The problem, however, is that his state-wide cuts are not being followed by the local municipalities.

So despite his well meaning attempts to cut spending, my real estate taxes went up for the first time in 3 years because of the way local boroughs determine real estate tax. They're still spending despite less state revenues coming in. So I get stuck making up the difference. My real estate tax bill would make most of you throw up.

I'd vote for him for reelection though on one condition - he gives up his fight to repeal the blue laws in Bergen County.

That's a sticking point for me.

Why do you want the anti-free enterprise (and questionable constitutional) blue laws to continue?

Because the value of my property and the quality of life in Bergen County would decrease immediately. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who has ever lived in Bergen County NJ to disagree with the Blue Laws.

No exageration - if the blue laws were repealed, I would move immediately.

To where? Blue Laws need to be overturned nationwide. There is absolutely NO reason for them to exist, anywhere.

My quality of life is vastly greater knowing I can purchase anything I want on a Sunday.

I'd move anywhere outside of Bergen County. The only thing that makes it bearable living in Bergen County is the Sunday's of peace and quiet.

We can still purchase anything we want by driving to Passaic or Essex County NJ or Rockland or Orange County NY - all within 1/2 hr drive. The difference is we don't have hundreds of thousands of people and vehicles who don't live here honking and creating traffic nightmares.

I get that most don't understand this. I don't expect you to if you've never lived in Bergen County. Think about this - in 6 days a year - stores in the the town of Paramus, NJ have retail sales in the upwards of $6 billion a year. That's the most retail sales for any zip code in the country. In only 6 days. And the vast majority of those sales (probably 98%) are derived from people who travel from outside Bergen County to the malls.

It is a decision by the residents in this area to have that retail available by allowing the zoning for the 5 malls within a 5 mile drive of my house. It is also a rational decision to tell those store owners that they have to be closed on Sunday if they want to have a store in this county.

I notice you didn't addres his comment regarding "questionable constitutionality".

So, let me get this straight, DF: You SUPPORT blue laws (whose constitutionality is questionable) because they improve the value of your property and your quality of life, but you do NOT support AZ 1070 (whose constitutionality is questionable), even though it improves the value of MY property and improves the quality of MY life.

Sorry - I ignored it because I don't see an argument that the Blue Laws are unconstitutional as long as they are secular in nature.

See McGowan v. Maryland, 366 U.S. 420, 81 S.Ct. 1101, 6 L.Ed.2d 393 (1961).

And you have my argument against AZ 1070 all wrong. I agree with the enforcement of this nation's immigration laws. I just think that is the sole purview of the Federal government unless delegated to local law enforcement - which is probably the answer anyway.

How can they be secular in nature if they choose Sunday, which is mandated by the dominant religion as a day of rest? Blue laws have a religious origin.

Really?

Alaska law allows communities to set their own regulations regarding alcohol possession and consumption.About 60% of the rural villages in Alaska have banned alcohol in their communities. It is even illegal to possess it in your own home for your own consumption.

One would think that is totally unacceptable, but in some of those communities 95% of all crime is alcohol related, so maybe it isn't that bad of an idea.

alcohol is different - there is a specific amendment to the Constitution, the 21st, that allows local control of the sale of alcohol.

I don't agree with it, but to change that would require another Amendment.

The choice of Sunday was originally a religous decision, but it is no longer based on religion. The current iteration of Blue Laws in Bergen County It is not at all motivated by any religion.

The choice is Sunday because its the most logical choice of a day off. Bergen County is generally made up of "bedroom communities" with commuters into NYC. Therefore, most people have off from work Saturday and Sunday and spend very little time at home anytime but the weekend. Saturday is the day you run your errands. Sunday is a day to relax and not have to fight traffic and crows every step of the way. Sunday also happens to be the day most people do their grocery shopping around here.

Christie's approval rating rises in poll

TRENTON - A majority of voters - 51 percent - in a Quinnipiac University Poll released Thursday said they approved of Gov. Christie's job performance, while 36 percent disapproved.

In Quinnipiac's previous poll, issued in June, 44 percent said they approved of Christie and 43 percent disapproved.

Fifty-one percent of respondents in the latest poll also described the first-term Republican as a "leader," while 43 percent called him a "bully." And 46 percent said he was "confrontational," while 43 percent called him "honest and refreshing."The 1,190 voters were polled from Aug. 9 to Tuesday, with a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points. - AP

As does the designation of what year it is. Get over it.
