1) True. And UD bought the Chrysler plant...a move that will strengthen UD and the Newark area. Fisker bought the GM plant and is building a hybrid.

3) Tourism...and homebuilding down? Yee-ha! The beauty of Delaware was the fact that it still had open land. Now it is starting to look like North Jersey.

1. Two closed. One was bought by UD to raise and turn into a technology campus and the other was bought by Fisker Automotive to start building electric automobiles.
2. The biggie was MBNA being taken over by BofA. Lots of jobs lost in the financial industry for sure.

6. Not correct at all; in fact WAY off. Carper, Biden, and the Governors have been highly supportive of Dover AFB. Dover AFB has never been a BRAC casualty in any round and has absorbed many BRAC'ed units from surrounding states, particularly NJ. The base infrastructure has been boosted significantly (and I would know, since I was contracting officer on several multi-million dollar construction projects on base when I worked there from 2001 - 2006). We built a new aerial port (making DoDs largest even larger), a new mortuary, a new fuel cell dock facility, and three new entrance gates complete with all the modern threat detection equipment and entry barriers just while I was there. They're currently building a new fitness center (believe me when I say it will be a Taj Majal among fitness centers) which I can't wait to use, a new auto hobby shop, and a new outdoor recreation center. They just recently completed a new Class 7 store and a huge gas station with about 16 islands. They just absorbed two new squadrons of C-17s from Charleston in the past couple of years and are still growing. That base is absolutely BOOMING with the full support of the local Democrat contingent.

I was a happy MBNA customer until they were taken over. BofA SUCKS!

MBNA owned Wilmington, in many ways supplanting DuPont as the company synonymous with the city. They built and built like you wouldn't believe from Newark to Wilmington to Dover. You'd have been hard pressed to find a northern Delawarean that didn't have a close friend or family member working for MBNA by the mid-90s. It was a major blow when they went under. Suffice to say, there is no shortage of office space right now in New Castle County.

Yet another blow not mentioned was the closing of the Valero refinery in Delaware City. I believe it was recently announced that there was a new buyer and the refinery may be restarted, but I haven't been following closely. I have mixed feelings about that one. While I'd like to keep the jobs, everyone must admit that the site has had one environmental problem after another. We're not talking little stuff either. We're talking tanks of sulfuric acid exploding and the man working on it literally melting with no remains found, toxic liquids in the tens of thousands of gallons spilled over the containment areas into the Delaware River, and far to frequent airborn toxic releases.

On a smaller scale, Dover has taken significant hits due to the outsourcing of the former #1 employer Playtex. My dad was given the boot from Playtex with 40 years service (accumulated both before and after his tour in Vietnam) when his division was packed and sent to Malaysia. That was a smack in the face.

MBNA did grow to be the #1 employer in the state. Going further, many of their former employees spun off to help build Juniper and First USA while others helped expand the rest of the credit card giants around town. BOA did cut a lot of jobs when they first bought Fleet, and then cut more when they bought MBNA. They screwed Delaware out of hundreds of thousands of dollars when they got financial incentives to not cut jobs...and then went and cut jobs anyway with some creative accounting. Did the same thing up in New England...and litterally laughed (I was in some of the meetings) at the stupidity of the polticians...everyone was throwing money at BOA.

As far as the refinery goes...I'd love to have it gone. 400-500 jobs aren't worth what they've done to the area.
