Re: UW clinic to offer second trimester abortions!!!
Then again, this whole thread started with Jeff celebrating the arrival of second trimester abortions at UW as the greatest human rights advancement on behalf of women since the beginning of time ...
... and me questioning how the women's rights movement has become wedded to universal abortion on demand, when the original feminists saw abortion as an assault on the dignity of women.
To women like Susan B. Anthony, a woman was truly equal when she was allowed to fully woman. The original feminists didn't want to be the same as men; they wanted and demanded dignity, and the recognition of their womanhood. They saw abortion as an act of denial of their right to be free, and fully woman.
Today, feminists see equality not in being allowed to be fully woman, but essentially as being treated the same as a man. So, since pregnancy can force a woman into some role that a man can never perform, abortion is seen liberating women from some silly "burden" that nature has imposed upon them.
Me, I think the original feminists had it right.

Regarding this convo, Tman and Jolt would outright ban abortion because they think it's murder. Women would be thrown in jail.
I brought up the concept of spontaneous abortion and the dilemna of how to deal with it. Do we require all women and girls of child bearing age to check in weekly for pregnancy tests? What do we do if they're pregant, then it's spontaneously aborted, like many of em are? - Take the girl to court? Put her in jail until a forensic analysis? No, just keep abortion legal and safe. Make contraceptives available. Force insurance companies to cover birth control. All things un catholic.
I bring god into it because the abortion debate for many is a matter of faith. If that's the case then why is god murdering so many babies? Could we press charges against god for spontaneously aborting a fetus? Tman, won't even touch this, cuz he can't. He aint smart enough. And he's pissed.

Vicious and spiteful? Cuz I rattle catholics? Perhaps, it's a matter of perspective. Religion is a scourge.
Well Intentioned? You obviously missed the post about "good catholics" either being catholics in name only OR willing enablers of an archaic and dangerous moral and ethical code.

Me, I think the original feminists had it right.
Cap'n...care to comment on the PM's I sent to you last week...
...I believe the theme was the same. Abortion, as it's been framed within politics, is an all or nothing litmus test. There are legitimate situations where, for health reasons, abortion must be considered. As the statistics show, however, those situations arise in less that 10% of all pregnancies (that's 10% of ALL pregnancies, not just pregnancies by women who are considering abortion.).
These strawman arguments D1B throws out are merely desperate attempts to interject controversy into what is an otherwise clear-cut issue.
More importantly, those who would continue using universal "abortion on demand" as the defacto benchmark of feminist rights, have completely lost the intent of the feminist movement, which, as Joe pointed out, was the recognition, respect and freedom given to women to exist, fulfill and express themselves as unique beings: Removing the concept of chattel or "duty" of servitude to man and family.
Most post-modern feminst leaders no longer equate abortion-on-demand as necessary to achieve their goals. In fact the derailing of feminism by the Friedan era de-gendrification set, ultimately resulted in reversing advances in womens rights over the past century. In one breath, Friedan, Dworkin, Yard, et al, would state the necessity to obtain the respect, recognition and rights to become "equals", most often by using males as the standard. Yet in another breath, they insisted the uniqueness afforded them social and legal rights exceeding men, who were inferior and embodied corrupt morality. The desired outcome, a masculinization of women, as defined by society, and the inevitable elimination of "gender as the definer", contradicted the original precept of feminism which was to acknowledge and transcend women as unique valued beings. In a single sentence, this de-gendrification and "choice" to seek advancement by diminishing (not equalizing) male position in society, being contradictory to every principle sought through feminism, was the harbinger of inevitable failure of second-wave feminism.
Thankfully, even despite the attempts to silence dissident voices of Hoff-Sommers, Wolf and Paglia, most "third wave" and post modern feminists have begun to abandon the "male-hate" as a component of liberation.
But back to the essence of the debate...so long as infanticide is elevated by fools like D1B as a sign of "progress", the only "progress" that will take place is the advancement of political agendas tailored to weaken democratic societies, disrupt healthy social structures, and confuse children as they develop and attempt to define themselves within that disrupted social structure.
I realize I'm wasting my time attempting to convince you, D1B of anything, as you do not study or research before you speak, and have no desire to find truth. You've insultingly taken a tiny bit of education, memorized soundbite philosophy, then added a heaping dose of hate, and perversely spent your life wandering around attempting to interfere with reasoned debate and silence people who share opposing views.
And you call yourself enlightened?
With fools like you in their corner, even post modern feminism has lost the battle.
