The Conk/Donk Concession Thread

Post by ToTheLeft »

To bring a spirit of agreement and peace to the Poli forum...

What are some things about "the other party" that you agree with? What are some actions or accomplishments of your opposing faction that you found to be beneficial, inspiring, or otherwise interesting and useful?

Things that should be posted here...

- "I really like Obama's stance on small business" - Native

- "I thought G.W. Bush was great for Education" - houndawg

(I don't expect either of these to be true, just giving examples)

(Also, you can go as far back into history as you want. Reagan, JFK, FDR, etc.)

Things that shouldn't be posted here (but likely will be anyways)

- "I think Kerry losing the election was great for America" - Native

- "I hate that fvcker Bush" - houndawg

Thought this would be fun to see what happens here. That, or no one will post, and this will sink down the page. :thumb:

I liked Ike's recognition of the military/industrial complex, and his presidency in general. Like D said in another thread, guys of his quality don't stand a chance in today's political environment.

I don't know if getting the Hatfield's & McCoy's together for a barn dance is gonna work but I like the idea of it anyway.

Don't forget the Interstate System!

Ike seems like a solid guy. I know from the little bit of reading I've done on WWII, I like what I've seen from him in that regard. What I've read about him as a President seems right on par.

The Hatfields and McCoy's live together in this big barn known as the Poli forum anyways. Might as well try and get em to dance instead of lighting fires and throwing crap at each other. ;-)

Thanks for this thread, TTL! But if you think I never say good things about the opposition, you are not paying attention!

In any case, I will take the bait! I am proud of the fact America elected a black President! :thumb: I am happy that the President is the father of a successful and apparently happy, functional, nuclear family! I am relieved that the President has wisely retained so many of the Bush war policies that he previously condemned. I am not yet willing to say that I think the President has genuinely reached across the aisle or is anywhere close to the center, but I am pleased that the President has recently toned down his anti-American and anti-Republican rhetoric and accepted a few (inevitable) comprises such as extension of the Bush tax cuts. :thumb: I thought the President had a great interview with O'Reilly in which he actually praised the American people and came off as a nice and reasonable guy. :notworthy:

Even though it was only a hypothetical, I take your point about Obama's supposed friendliness towards small business, TTL. :thumb: In this case, however, I strongly disagree that Obama's narrowly targeted policies are good for any business, let alone small business. His efforts to transform society are costly, intrusive, unsustainable and bad for business. Let's say I am a great hunting dog and bring home an elk. You really think I should be grateful when all I get to keep is some hamburger and a bone to gnaw on? ...and if I am a small business I get to keep an extra bone? :ohno:

I am grateful that Kennedy reduced taxes. :thumb:

I am thankful that Clinton accepted and even co-opted Republican ideas after the 1994 election. :thumb:

I think Jimmy carter is a nice man and one of the best ex-Presidents in history.

I like Joe Manchin and wish he would switch parties. :?

TTBF is intelligent and professionally competent. :ugeek:

Cleets is brilliant and well intentioned. :notworthy:

Kalm works hard and is sincere. :thumb: ...even when he is being sincerely sarcastic!

Dawg has flashes of occasional insight.

Skelly knows his stuff about latino demographics. :thumb:

Young Terrier is very bright, studious, and a good person. :ugeek:

I love my fence sitter friends even though they disagree with me most of the time.

Sorry, but it was reeeaaallly great for America that Kerry lost. There is a biiiiig difference between "it's good for America that 'x' lost" and "I hate that fvcker 'x'!" I do NOT hate that fvcker Kerry.

Speaking from experience, local and state government regulatory bureacracies and 90% of their employees are extremely inefficient and a gigantic pain in the ass. Everyone is affraid to answer a question and very few of them can take charge of a situation, think outside the box or help a constituent resolve a problem - which is their job.

Welfare programs and their ilk are failing on many levels. I know of some anecdotal instances where it's helped someone out of poverty, but I'm concerned they're becoming the exception. I have a friend who owns a small store, and some of the choices made by those on food stamps is appalling. What's worse is it appears to create generational dependency.

Teddy Roosevelt was an extremely good Republican president. Both he and Eisenhower understood the threat posed by the extreme right of their party and the threat of entrenched monopolistic power.

Bill Clinton was the best Repbulican President of the 20th century.

Nixon was brilliant, surrounded himself with brilliant people and started the EPA and the Endangered Species Act.

Lincoln's RR, College Land Grant, and Homestead acts laid the foundation and infrastructure that helped open up the west.

I liked Tricky Dick's cat-like personality

I like that Gerald Ford looks like Superindentent Chalmers.

I like Bush for making me one of the cool kids for hating him during college.

Oh and Bruce Springsteen + Reagan + quick cuts of Kansas wheat fields and Pittsburgh steel mills give anyone a good old fashioned American hard on.

Senator Bill Nelson really helped me with getting my initial "mini-eagle" to originate FHA loans and is a heckuva nice guy to boot.

There was a sizable element of truth to the Domino Theory.

In spite of his miserable failures, George W Bush meant well and was sincere in the belief that what he was doing was best for the nation as he knew it.

When native's meds are adjusted properly he is capable of occasional coherent thought. :kisswink:

I love me some William F. Buckley and wish he fell further to the left on the political spectrum.

Jimmy Carter was proof that an engineer's mentality isn't a good fit for the job of Prez.

Sarah Palin has as much right as any other American to run for President.

Newt Gingrich's appalling treatment of his dying wife is good preparation for the kind of tough decisions facing a holder of high political office.

I have seen "an armed society is a polite society" work in person.

Any American worthy of the name will make a pilgrimage to wherever they plant Dick Cheney and piss on his grave until nothing will grow on it. Sorry, I can only handle so much on the first try.

Maybe we could all agree on an single issue to debate, in our own special way of course, and the usual suspects can argue the opposing viewpoint?
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

JFK's tax cuts.

Bill Clinton's agreement to welfare reform.

For those citing JFK's tax cuts, shouldn't you include Obama's as well? And what about his proposal to cut corporate taxes while closing loopholes like JFK did?
