From this mornings practice
DeNarius McGhee was throwing pills all day. He is so fun to watch, even in practice. His energy is seemingly endless and he is always competing.

Tanner Bleskin had a few nice catches today, as did Everett Gilbert. But the wideout impressing me the most is Elvis Akpla. His routes are crisp and his hands are great. He looks like he prepared himself well to have a standout senior season.

Favorite quote from new reporter Colter Nuanez. Some Griz guys might recognize the name.
Today's practice, the first in pads, was as spirited a Day 3 practice in the four college football camps (two at Montana, one at Central Washington, now one at MSU) as I've seen in my short career as a sports writer. Scuffles broke out all over the place and competitive enthusiasm, despite the lack of full pads, was on display everywhere.

Some these guy look a little chubby, maybe a tad out of shape?

Hope the Cats aren't still in that self satisfied mode, you know, like they were after winning the BSC championship last year?

Zach Minter
but honestly, I want nothing more than to see this team use our abilities the best we can. I want nothing more than for us to be national champions. We already got a taste of being conference champions last year. That’s all I want, that’s all I practice for is for our team to go all the way.”
Elvis Akpla
Individually, it’s now or never, honestly. This is my last year and I want to go out with a bang. As a team, it’s national championship or bust. Regardless of what happens, we have to win it. Not just get there, we have to win it. We feel like we are the most talented team in the nation.
Leo Davis
“As a team, we working for that championship. We just want to get better day by day, take it game by game. As you can see, we are doing that. Today’s practice was way better than the last.”
I could post some tv interviews but I think you get the point.

AS far as being chubby ?

Rob Ash
"Based on what we've heard from athletic trainers and strength coaches, our guys had a very good summer," Ash said on the eve of players reporting to camp for the beginning of practices leading to the 2011 season. "Our indications are that some of the guys may have pushed so hard (during summer workouts) that there are some nagging injuries entering camp. But that's a great problem to have. I think the team will be in excellent condition when we start practice on Friday."

Doesn't count if someone needs to point it out. Besides, I'm not real sure what that phrase means in the way the author intended it to mean.....

doesn't seem to be much "buzz" about your secondary. are they being overlooked thanks to all the hype surrounding guys like Minter and McGhee? or will the secondary be a weakness for the Cats?

Kind of an unknown at this point, we probably have more talent in the secondary than we have had in years, but they are all young we will have to see how it shakes out. The hope is that a strong DL will give them time to mature quickly.

If they were NDSU they'd be drawing national attention at this point. I'm just sayin'.... :coffee:

Throwing pills? I'm not exactly sure that was the most powerful analogy.

Otherwise, I might be an All-American!

In regards to our secondary, all four of our projected starters got a lot of playing time last year.

Darius Jones Jr- CB - Started all of last season and was top 5 in the conference in PBU. He is fairly quick, very disciplined. May not make the interception but usually has his receiver blanketed.

Joel Fuller Jr- S - he earned playing time as freshman, very smart, we rotated our safeties a lot last year so he was probably in the game 60% of the time on defense. Solid player.

Sean Gord So. DB - Earned nickel spot as a freshman and started at CB when injuries became an issue. Mirror image of Jones but hits harder.

Steven Bethley So. S- He played on a lot of special teams and got a lot of playing time in about 2-3 games as a true freshman when injuries and suspensions forced the issue. He was able to put himself into position to make plays last year because the kid can run and hit, but looked a little tentative at times on the field as he was learning on the fly. He had a very good spring as his understanding of the defense grew and he was able to play fast. Reminds of Schrader from Sac State that graduated last year.

Nickel back - Wide open competition.

Overall we will be very quick and athletic, but last year we were 7th or 8th in the conference in interceptions and I don't know how we will move up that category.
