What do you mean by "clean program"
He may not have faced any recruiting violations, but Penn State ranks right up there with Miami of the 90's when it comes to arrests and legal issues within the team.
Just a couple years ago a player....Chris Bell I think it was....threatened his teammate with a 12 inch blade over a freaking cell phone case. Just prior to that in 2007 and into 2008 teammate Chris Baker was arrested multiple times before being kicked off the team.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A former defensive coordinator who was integral for decades to Penn State's success in football was accused Saturday of sexually abusing eight boys, and the school's athletic director and an administrator were charged with perjury and failing to report what they knew about the allegations in a case that prosecutors said uncovered a years-long trail of a predator and those who protected him...

Well, we'll see how Penn State does to close out the regular season. They're home against Nebraska, then at Ohio State, then at Wisconsin. If they win those three games it's going to be kind of hard to argue that there's a reason to change anything.

There's much more to it than wins and losses. The Penn State Board of Trustees is meeting this evening. I suspect a lot of pink slips are going to be issued in the very near future.JohnStOnge wrote:Well, we'll see how Penn State does to close out the regular season. Re: Joe Paterno
He may have to step down because of this scandal...but he DID do what he was supposed to do (unlike Tressel). Inform the campus police chief and AD...who proceeded to sweep it under the rug.
It would be a very bad mark on his legacy for him to be caught up in all of this. One thing is he should of sought to have Sandusky banned from campus as soon as he heard about it. But I'm sure he figured that because the campus police chief and AD didn't pursue it further, he thought that it was just hearsay and rumors.

Re: Joe Paterno
This is disgusting. I actually used to respect and defend JoePa from the ageism critics because he had run such a "clean" program, but now I'm wondering what else Penn State might've hidden to protect the school. I mean seriously, not reporting a coach SEXUALLY MOLESTING CHILDREN?! This scandal trumps any other sports scandal, on any level, by a long shot.

Re: Joe Paterno
Been posting this on the "Joe Pa" and the local ESPN Radio station Facebook pages
Before we get all "pitchforks and torches", and march on State College calling for Paterno's head. Joe Pa HEARD from his grad assistant that Sandusky was seen in the locker room "doing something". He went and informed the athletic director and campus police chief about the situation to be looked into. THEY obviously didn't look into it. Because they didn't look into it, Joe Pa must of believed that there was nothing to it. He heard about something and told the proper authorities. The campus police chief to secure the campus and keep Sandusky OFF the property, and athletic director represent the University in whatever official investigation that was to occur. Up until now there was no reason to not believe that it wasn't hearsay.
And why didn't the grad assistant IMMEDIATELY go to the campus police and AD himself? Was Joe Pa supposed to call the state police? FBI? CPS? He did what he was supposed to do, and now he is being held responsible for those who are his superiors' actions? And also, if nothing was to come of all of this and it WAS hearsay and Joe Pa caused an unwarranted investigation into Penn State then people would be calling for his job because of that. It is a terrible situation. But can we PLEASE attempt to think about this rationally?

Re: Joe Paterno
This story is snowballing quickly.
To put it in perspective - I live in the Philadelphia metroplitan area & listen to Philly sports talk on my commute - which is just over an hour. On a station (WIP) that talks about next to zero college sports & almost exclusivley Phillies & Eagles it was shocking on the morning of an Eagles home MNF game to hear absolutely zero about the Eagles & nothing but PSU talk.
To recap - PSU's BOT got rid of the AD & their "CFO" last night. It may very well be impossible for Paterno, McQueary and any of the current coaching staff to survive.
If I was a betting man, PSU will have a new coach next season & a new staff. Spanier, the school President may go as well. The 23 page grand jury report is some of the most shocking, graphic stuff you'll ever read.

It's pretty clear from how fast this has snowballed, people being fired, the grand jury report, etc... some really fucked up shit happened.DSUrocks07 wrote:Been posting this on the "Joe Pa" and the local ESPN Radio station Facebook pages

Also, to your point of "Should JoPa gone straight to CPS?".....the answer is YES! I don't know about the college level, but to coach at the HS and youth level a coach must be a Mandatory Reporter....that means if there is evidence of ANY KIND....I mean ANY kind....a report MUST....I repeate MUST...be made to CPS/DHS. The same goes for the grad assistant, and the athletic department members that were alerted. There should have been an investigation up front. What JoPa did is willful ignorance of the illegal activities....in many crimes that is a crime itself.
By not following up and making sure proper actions were taken, that entire university fucked itself...
Re: Joe Paterno
Not only that, isn't Paterno a senior executive at PSU? He should have involved the police from the start.....One of Paterno's junior employees reported directly to him an eyewitness account that a former senior member of his staff was sexually assaulting a 10 year old boy in the football facility.
You can't use the "I told my boss and I'll stop there" excuse on that one....there NEEDS to be follow up on that...especially when it's IN YOUR FUCKING FACILITY.

That was my perspective too. 610WIP/94WYSP talk Eagles football almost year round. On the morning of an Eagles home MNF game, and the Monday after the Phils bring back Jim Thome, the discussion was Joe Pa and Penn State.bluehenbillk wrote:This story is snowballing quickly.

Wow, I think we might have seen JoePa's last days at Penn State. I heard about this scandal a couple days ago but I didn't really think anything of it but when I heard that one of his former assistants was a pedophile....

Penn State is probably licking their chops about this. Not the scandal, but the chance to get rid of Paterno.
