Re: North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
Ok I'll get into the Sam Houston vs. MVC discussion. I went into the post season thinking Sam Houston would be kind of a middle of the pack team in the CAA or MVC and after all is said and done I still think that. I realize Northern Iowa got blown out by Montana and Montana lost to Sam Houston but UNI played Montana at Missoula while Montana played Sam Houston (with what everyone says has an unusual offense) on the road on a Friday night following exam week. And UNI did play North Dakota State closer than Sam Houston State did.
I do consider the CAA to be the toughest top to bottom FCS league and I consider the MVC to be the second toughest top to bottom. I'm talking about year in and year out. This year it's possible the MVC may have been a little tougher as the CAA may have been a little down. But the bottom line is that I believe that if you'd have had this Sam Houston State team playing week in and week out in the CAA or MVC they may not have even made the playoffs. And I think it's VERY unlikely that they'd have been undefeated and a #1 seed.
Of course we'll never know. All we know with respect to how Sam Houston State did against the MVC is that they beat the worst team in that conference 20-6 and lost to the best team in it by 17-6.

What fun we are having!
SHSU fans laugh at UM but seem to have a little more respect For MSU, but they claim ownership over The BSC and the bad bison. They thought most Montana folks were pricks.
Thats the first "chipper" in the New NDSU Football Dynasty!
Should have been 2 but for bill fette giving our first one to some team out west.
The NDSU BISON are the best team in The country just as I have been telling you cry babies for a couple years. Hate away, its your culture. AGS does better because haters like glib dopey, ewu, thumper and the rest of the foul dont post hate over there.
Get use to the new regime. For the next decade The NDSU BISON will rule the roost. In that time frame there is an excellent chance NDSU will be invited into the Big 12. Hate on that and praise THE BISON!
GO BISON!!!
GO BISON!!

"I've watched the Montana/Sam Houston State game a couple times. It was easy to see the flaws in Montanas game plan. On the option they tried to defend it with an inside linebacker, which is almost impossible as they quickly found out. Also Montana doesn't appear to have much of a passrush. They are very good straight up against the rush, but don't have a lot of pursuit speed especially with their linebackers. But they definitely wore Sam Houston down, they were really sucking air in the 2nd half. On the play that decided the game, Sam Houston went on fourth and short with three minutes to go. and bounced Tim Fanders to their left. The Montana defensive end instead of holding his position, crashed toward the center of the line, Flanders bounced outside of him and easily made a first down, end of game. I don't think they'll have as easy a time with North Dakota State. They are a notch above Montana both offensively and defensively. They've got a punishing running attack that will get to Sam Houston sooner or later and if they fill up the box, it'll be Ryan Smith and Big Tex one on one. Like taking candy from a baby. They'll win by at least three scores."
This is what I posted Arizona Grizzly funny man. It turns out I was wrong about Sam Houston, they are a better defensive team than I thought and as it turns out I was wrong about you, you're not funny. If you've got something to contribute do that, but otherwise we don't want to see your name. BTW, I was there the last time NDSU played Montana.

and How do you think those other team would stack up vs SHSU's defense? NDSUs off looked just a little less awful than the bearkats. 9 first downs and 235 yrds of total off.JohnStOnge wrote:Ok I'll get into the Sam Houston vs. MVC discussion. You aren't even the first team this year to hold them to 9 first downs.
Kats defense is very good, probably rank about 4th in the MVC, maybe 3rd, and that is a compliment.

Dry your eyes coach, nobody said YSU should be the national champ. Just said that unlike the Kats, the Bisons played their toughest games before the playoffs.CoachL wrote:houndawg wrote:

Sam Houston State University was in the Championship game vs. North Dakota State.
The teams you mention were not.
This is the Division I Football Championship Subdivision where championships are settled ON THE FIELD (not on message boards). By your perverted logic, Youngstown State should be the National Champs since they beat NDSU.
That ain't the way it works.
Congratulations to the North Dakota State University Bison - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

You are correct 89Hen. On the idiots list Illinois State was the best team we played. Their defense was as good as SHSU. It was a very similar game to the NCG.89Hen wrote:You prove once again how stupid you are.houndawg wrote:

You can take SIU off the list. They arent very good. Im not sure the at large is a realistic goal for them but it is for UNI.

Re: North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
I don't know if I'd say that. I'm just saying the MVC was very tough top to bottom this year with a lot of teams near the same level so that there was a risk of losing most weeks. So you had a team like Youngstown State, for instance, that beat NDSU at the Fargodome...and beat them worse than the final score indicated as they physically controlled the game...but lost four conference games by 2, 7, 4, and 4 points. Plus their FBS game was against Michigan State. Put them against Sam Houston State's schedule and they'd have had a real good shot at going undefeated. They would have, I think, been a prohibitive favorite to beat everybody on that schedule except New Mexico and they'd certainly have had a shot at beating New Mexico too. Sam Houston State won its conference games by 21, 35, 40, 24, 66, 29, and 26 points. It was a MUCH easlier slate than what they'd have been confronted with in the MVC.Just said that unlike the Kats, the Bisons played their toughest games before the playoffs.
I am a Southland fan and hope the conference improves but right now it is what it is: A middle of the road FCS league in terms of top to bottom strength. That was a factor in SHSU going undefeated and getting home field. To SHSU's credit, unlike what happened with McNeese in 2007 and SFA in 2010, SHSU actually won its home games instead of getting blown out. SHSU was certainly good enough to have a shot at beating anybody in FCS and came darned close to winning it all. But if they'd have been in the MVC they'd have had 5 or more conference games against teams good enough to beat them. In the CAA maybe more than that. Odds of them finishing undefeated would have been, I think, very small and ending up like Youngstown State would not have been out of the question. A scenario in which a team of Sam Houston State's caliber played the schedule YSU played, including Michigan State as the FBS game, and ended up sitting the playoffs out is not at all unrealistic.

Re: North Dakota State vs Sam Houston State FCS Championship
I think NDSU being in the MVC pretty much rules that out. SHSU did give up 42 points in regulation to a very bad New Mexico team during the regular season as well as 27 and 28 against Stony Brook and Montana in the playoffs. NDSU did give up 27 once against Youngstown State but really shut down some high scoring offenses...Lehigh, Georgia Southern, and Sam Houston State...in the playoffs. Only one TD in those three games. And the overall bottom line is that NDSU gave up fewer points playing a much tougher overall schedule than SHSU did.SHSU may have had the best defense in the MVFC.
SHSU did, I think, have a really good defense. But I don't think it was as good as NDSU's.

Bison gave up 27 points in the playoffs, the averaged rounded up per MENSA Standards to 6.93 points per game.
