The Maloffs selling Kings to Seattle Group

Post by EPJr »

The Maloofs, owners of the Sacramento Kings, are finalizing a deal to move the team to Seattle, according to a report on Yahoo! Sports.

The report says team would sold for $500 million to hedge fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft chairman Steve Ballmer and play in Seattle's Key Arena, as early as next season, before a new arena is built. The team would play at Key Arena for two seasons.

I heard the Maloofs declined the offer…although it could just be they are working out the finer details. The Kings have a lot of debt tied to them.

From what I hear, it is about 50-50, which as recently as last week it was about 85-15 favor of the Kings staying in Sacramento. The Seattle group has made it clear to anyone in the league that they are looking to move a team to Seattle, contingent on that team's owners selling to a local Seattle group. The Maloofs, until very recently, had expressed no desire in selling the Kings, not even to any local Sacramento group. As the city has found out, dealing with the Maloofs can be extremely risky which is why I'm not saying it is a done deal (I will say it looks very close).

I also have heard that the move would have to be approved by the NBA relocation committee, which is chaired by Clay Bennett. It would be funny if he vetoes the deal and keeps the Kings from moving to Seattle, especially after Bennett took the Sonics to Oklahoma City. However, all indications are, if the deal is presented to them, they would not keep the Kings from going to Seattle.

The big question I have is why? After having a new owner purchase the Sonics and then taking them away from Seattle, they are doing the exact same thing to Sacramento. I'm sure there will be a small group of Sonics fans at the Rose Garden in Portland this Sunday, wearing their old Sonic jerseys and trying to divert attention to them (basically saying how they were "wronged" by Stern and the NBA). I know this because they do this every time the Thunder come to Portland. They do not even cheer FOR the Blazers, they just cheer against the Thunder, Stern, Bennett and the rest of the NBA. We never wanted to be a part of this, as the Thunder are in the same division and we have to beat them for a shot at the playoffs every year. Now they want the Sacramento fans to feel how they felt. Pretty two-faced, if you ask me. :ohno:

CBS-13 in Sac reported around noon that the Maloofs had rejected the deal. And STILL we have dummies parading around as if it's a done deal.

:ohno:

Spoiler: show
That's not you, SD.

The more I'm getting into it, the more it seems like "If you were to sell your sports car, what price would you put on it?"

The Maloofs and the Seattle group are talking, that much is certain. But the Maloofs have been flaky throughout and the Seattle group itself has been talking to other teams as well. A good thing in all this for Sacramento is that it has given mayor KJ an idea of what the Maloofs would sell for (whether true or not) and he now has a chance of getting a local Sacramento group together. Don't count him out, he convinced the Maloofs not to move to Anaheim. The trucks are not moving up I-5 yet.

I think it was more of the financials that derailed the Anaheim deal. Relocation fees plus fees paid to both the Lake Show and the Clips added who knows how many more millions to the cost.

SD is correct on the Anaheim deal. I'm sure the Maloofs didn't want to front for all that, and Anaheim probably couldn't afford to do it for them.

As a fan who was in this situation a number of years ago... this is tough. When the North Stars moved to Dallas, the Winnipeg Jets eyed Minnesota before ultimately choosing (with disastrous results) Phoenix. At the time, I remember being horribly conflicted - I wanted hockey back - but I really didn't want to steal a team from others to make that happen (short of stealing the Stars back from Dallas... because well... fuck Dallas, that's why)

It ended up being a moot point when they gave us an expansion team - but... I can see the struggle.

That being said... Sacto is the 19th largest media market, and only has one pro sports team. By comparison:

20. Orlando: 1
21. St. Louis: 3 teams in the big 5 (counting NHL and MLS)
22. Pittsburgh: 3
23. Baltimore: 2
24. Portland: 2
25. Indy: 2
26. San Diego: 2
27. Hartford: 0

It's insane... Sacramento would be the only top 20 market without a major franchise.

So you want the Kings to return to Kansas City?

Just give in and become a Chiefs fan. Great game-day atmosphere, more similar to a college game than sterile NFL games.

IDGAF where the team comes from, I just want an NBA team there when I'm there.

I will never leave the Vikings or Twins....ever. I could live 1 block from Lambeau/Soldier/Arrowhead or US Cellular/Kauffman/Comerica/Miller and I would still hope those teams lose every single game.

I'm a Clipper fan, but if I was in a city that an NBA team moved too, I'm going to a fan of that team because I didn't grow up engrossed in the Clippers like I did Twins and Vikings

Understand. I adopted the Blackhawks when I moved to Chicago in the same way that you would adopt the Kings if they returned to KC. I grew up a Chiefs fan and will always be one. I've lived in Chicago for almost 25 years and have warmed to the Bears over time. I'll never like them more than the Chiefs but I do follow them more than I did when I first moved here.

But to bring out their faded Payton and Kemp jerseys, sit in the stands taking up spots for actual Blazer fans, and frown at all of us who will not join in their pathetic "Save Our Sonics" chants is just too much. Get over it, guys. This just ain't happening. CBS-13 is reporting that the Maloofs are demanding concessions that the Seattle billionaire just ain't likely to cave for. That includes creative control despite minority owner status. What majority owner would go for THAT?!?

I don't think you watch enough NBA, SE...the Blazers sell out regularly.

Don't get me wrong- I want the NBA back in Seattle, no matter how it happens. :thumb: Seattle is a great basketball city and deserves a team. Clay Bennett should pay for what he did to SuperSonics fans years ago...total highway robbery, licensed and abetted by David Stern and Howard Schultz. Absolutely pathetic. But to say the Blazers suck is pretty baseless. Sure, they aren't the Lakers, but they have been above-average for most of the last 20 years. They've had a few rough years, sure, but they've done well for themselves compared to the rest of the NBA teams with similar-sized markets. I for one cannot wait for the return of the PNW basketball rivalry.
