Week 8 - Conference by Conference Breakdown

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Sunday - Western Playoff Conferences

Big Sky

EWU 7-42 BYU
PORTST 20-38 IDST
NAU 29-20 WEBER
NCOL 7-52 UMT
CSUS 9-20 MTST

  • NConf Record: 0-1
    Overall: 9-16

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 4-6

Best Performance: Northern Arizona 29, Weber St. 20 - Lumberjacks score 2 offensive touchdowns, the most Weber's given up in a game since September 15th.

Worst Performance: Portland St. 20, Idaho St. 38 - Already, Viking fans are rapidly bailing from the Glanville Express.

Most Surprising Result: Idaho St. 38, Portland St. 20 - Bengal quarterbacks still can't stop throwing it to the other team, but 2 consecutive long fumble return touchdowns allow John Zamberlin to get his first solid win as Idaho State's head coach.

Southland

SFA 29-52 TXST
NWST 20-42 SHSU
UCA 37-33 SELA
MCNSE 28-7 NICH

    vs. FCS: 0-0

Best Performance: (#6) McNeese St. 28, (#13) Nicholls St. 7 - 3 fumble recoveries allow the Cowboys to take a commanding lead in the Southland.

Worst Performance: Stephen F. Austin 29, Texas St. 52 - 508 meaningless passing yards for Lumberjack QB Jeremy Moses as SFA badly loses the battle of the Southland basement.

Most Surprising Result: Stephen F. Austin 29, Texas St. 52 - With the Lumberjacks' near upset of Nicholls State last week, I figured they would have a chance to win this game. However, it was over at halftime.

Gateway

UNI 42-3 WIU
MIZST 10-45 SIU
WKU 56-7 INDST
ILST 27-22 YSU

  • NConf Record: 0-1

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 13-5

Best Performance: (#1) Northern Iowa 42, (#17) Western Illinois 3 - Eric Sanders only had to throw 8 passes as the Panther ground game decimates the Leathernecks.

Worst Performance: Indiana St. 7, (FBS) Western Kentucky 56 - Oddly enough, the Sycamores are the only FCS team to host an FBS team this year.

Most Surprising Result: Illinois St. 27, (#12) Youngstown St. 22 - Redbird QB Luke Drone definitely outplayed Penguin QB Tom Zetts in this one.

Ohio Valley

MUR 31-17 SEMO
UTM 23-29 EIU
TTU 10-38 JAXST
AP 28-25 SAM
TSU 7-49 EKU

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 13-17

    vs. FCS: 0-0

Best Performance: (#21) Eastern Kentucky 49, Tennessee St. 7 - Two 100-yard rushers for the Colonels as they surprisingly dominate a decent team.

Worst Performance: Southeast Missouri St. 17, Murray St. 31 - After a 0-0 first half, the Redhawks find a way to lose their fourth straight.

Most Surprising Result: Murray St. 31, Southeast Missouri St. 17 - The Racers end their 12-game FCS losing streak.

There is stiff competition from Indiana State and Stephen F. Austin.

And don't forget teams like St. Francis (PA), La Salle, & Savannah State. Northern Colorado would probably wipe the floor with those teams.

What happened to Maine this year?
‎"Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be as equal as prudential considerations will admit, will certainly be the aim of our legislatures, general and particular." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Hugh White, 1801

Though I haven't seen any of their games, there appear to be 2 reasons:

1. Their "Black Hole" defense has underperformed.
2. They have no passing game whatsoever; they start a Freshman QB & have little experience at receiver.
