Well, that doesn't seem to hold Asians back, most of whom came to the US:youngterrier wrote:I responded to this notion in my previous post but I would warn against being selective in your criticism as some of those things are not apparent in exclusively the black community, and we wouldn't want to be selective.blueballs wrote:YT:
Do you think the myriad of issues facing the black community that you mentioned earlier are caused by discrimination from the white community or by the black culture?
When I mention black culture I'm referring to the total disintegration of the nuclear family, the disrespect of women, hip hop culture of violence, gangs, lack of emphasis on education, extraordinarily high crime rate, and the void of moral leadership in the black community.
Poverty can accelerate the problems listed. Poverty is a problem of the black community which can be attributed to lack of capital, lack of employment, and other things that the community isn't directly responsible for.

I have been victim of prejudice (the Catholic thing is a different dynamic), and I haven't said that that doesn't exist. We're at an etymological disconnect. We're talking about 2 different things. My experience isn't nearly as bad as what others of a different skin tone face with normalized discrimination.Ibanez wrote:YT, serious question: have you ever, knowingly, been discriminated against because of your race? I know I have been. I've been beaten up for being catholic( thanks to the SC KKK), I've been taunted and beaten for being white( 5th grade, PE class.) it exists. You seem to think it doesn't.

Re: Zimmerman Trial
It isn't problematic. Maybe it is in your mind, but you overlook the basic fact that minority areas- specifically black neighborhoods- consume a hugely disproportionate amount of police services. In Charleston, over 65% of 911 calls are made from there, by residents. Every single black city councilman is hollering for more police in their East Side neighborhoods out of one side of their face, and then they hop on down to the local AME on Sunday and bitch about profiling out the other. Wendell Gilliard was on the phone constantly calling for cops to come clear corners downtown, and then his fellow councilman Kwadjo Campbell would walk up and give you sh!t for doing just that.youngterrier wrote:Well I'm aware that the reason they do these things isn't "simply because they are black" but rather its problematic for a variety of reasons and oh look you typed something more than 2 sentences here's a cookieCID1990 wrote:

This is precisely why you are going to have trouble with most of the posters who have a little more experience than you. You are quoting studies that simply point out that police spend more time in predominately black neighborhoods than white ones. You haven't even come close to the stage where you are asking yourself why this is so. You're happy to take the stats at face value, quote them for the sake of argument and then move on.
I strongly suggest that you do a ride-along or three with your local PD. You might find that reality is something different from Sociology 101.

I don't deny anything you say, it doesn't even contradict what I'm talking about, and I would go on (police force prescence is a lot like occupation, the area is more dangerous no doubt, you're more likely to stop wrong-doers, and the people don't like you but the politicians need you there) but you guys don't care to hear me talk about it more, because you hold an affinity for ~long posts~, so I'll spare you the boredom.CID1990 wrote:It isn't problematic. Re: Zimmerman Trial
It certainly does contradict what you say. You directly attributed the fact that police spend an inordinate amount of time in black neighborhoods as a function of racism. You butt up against first hand experience on a subject like this and your M.O. is to play the "I'd answer if only... X."youngterrier wrote:I don't deny anything you say, it doesn't even contradict what I'm talking about, and I would go on (police force prescence is a lot like occupation, the area is more dangerous no doubt, you're more likely to stop wrong-doers, and the people don't like you but the politicians need you there) but you guys don't care to hear me talk about it more, because you hold an affinity for ~long posts~, so I'll spare you the boredom.CID1990 wrote:

Re: Zimmerman Trial
racism: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular raceyoungterrier wrote:My position put simply is yes it is prejudiced, but racism is more than just prejudice. Racism is prejudice + power. And white people have all the power.
So, every comment that's racially insensitive is prejudiced, but not necessarily racist. follow? I'll admit I was inconsistent right there but I only made the concession because people focus more on the question of whether or not it's racist (ie hateful, and so on) and I'm trying to communicate a broader point and I don't want to be stuck on that one little tidbit which is basically and etymological miscommunication.
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination
racist - a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others
Synonyms: racialist
Adj. 1. racist - based on racial intolerance; "racist remarks"
2. racist - discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion
Synonyms: anti-semite, antiblack, anti-Semitic
youngterrior: I can provide a dozen similar definitions of "racist" and "racism." The only place where racism is discussed in relation to social/economic/political power is in a college classroom. In other words...not in the real world.
You are on a fool's errand trying to get people to believe that "nigger" is worse than "cracker", and that black people are more hurt than a white person when such words are exchanged. Someone has duped you into believing that man has no free will.
Stop typing on this subject. Ironically, your stats mean little in the real world. "He did it first" makes sense only in the mind of anyone under 6-year's old. Hate is hate. Racism is racism...and racists are racists...regardless of some historical context.
In a way, you are similar to Joltin'Joe. You read something...something silly...written by scholars, and now you are trying to "educate" others to see the "broader" light that you see. Unfortunately, that broader light has blinded you to the obvious. You can't see the trees through your forest.
