Re: NYC Marathon
While Kenyans are favorites today, the last time a Kenyan man and woman won in the same year was in 2003.
Since then, Kenyan men have won in 2003,2005, 2007, 2011 and Kenyan women have won in 2003 and 2010.
Last American winners were Meb in 2009 (last natural born American was Bill Rogers in 1979 with Salazar winning in 1980-82) and Miki Gorman for the women in 1977 (last natural born was Kim Merritt in 1975). Meb is the best US chance but not much so today for the Americans
Note that last year's NYC marathon was not contested because of Hurricane Sandy so this is the first contest in 2 years

Yeah I know about Sandy yes Meb is Uncle Sam's only hope but I don't think he will what about Galen Rupp is he entered???tribe_pride wrote:While Kenyans are favorites today, the last time a Kenyan man and woman won in the same year was in 2003.

Re: NYC Marathon
Nope - Rupp is a 5k/10k runner for now. He may move up one day but not for a bunch of years. Outside of the African countries, the top distance track guys finish their career there before moving up to the marathon because track is where they can earn more money.dal4018 wrote:Yeah I know about Sandy yes Meb is Uncle Sam's only hope but I don't think he will what about Galen Rupp is he entered???tribe_pride wrote:While Kenyans are favorites today, the last time a Kenyan man and woman won in the same year was in 2003.

America's other top other marathoner over the past few year, Ryan Hall, once again dropped out because of an injury before the race. Not sure that he has started (and at least not completed) a marathon since the US Trials for the Olympics almost 2 years ago.
Other guys you may have heard about like Dathan Ritzenhein and Matt Tegenkamp just did Chicago last month so they wouldn't be running this race.
Huge lead early on for Deba and Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia. Will be interesting to see if this strategy works well in a very windy day. Their first mile was slow too which means the wind should greatly effect the race and times should be pretty slow.

Re: NYC Marathon
At a minimum, there are 3 Americans in the lead pack of 20 or so. Meb, Hartmann is the big oafish looking guy who has done well in the past (4th in the past 2 Boston Marathons), and Ryan Vail.

Yeah but Meb is the only one I think could pull off the trick can't wait for Rupp to eventually to sink or swim.tribe_pride wrote:At a minimum, there are 3 Americans in the lead pack of 20 or so. Re: NYC Marathon
Looks like it'll be interesting to see if Jeptoo can catch Deba (or maybe when). Deba not looking good right now with about 5 miles to go I believe.
Guys are in a group of 9 now with all Americans out of it. At 15 mile mark, Meb about 25 seconds back with Vail and Hartmann about 1 minute behind Meb.

Re: NYC Marathon
Jeptoo has gained about 2 minutes on her in the last 5 miles and Deba just threw up. The only question is if Jeptoo made her move too late or if Deba can get another gear going.dal4018 wrote:Watching it Deba has a nice lead waiting for one of the guys to break away!!!tribe_pride wrote:Looks like it'll be interesting to see if Jeptoo can catch Deba (or maybe when). It's over. Jeptoo has this won. Only 15 seconds back with about 3 miles to go and Jeptoo has horrible form (but always does).tribe_pride wrote:Jeptoo has gained about 2 minutes on her in the last 5 miles and Deba just threw up. Re: NYC Marathon
Jeptoo with a strong win and Deba with a great finish even when she was passed for good. Obviously disappointed but great running nonetheless. Great finish by Latvian and French women for 3rd and 4th. Looks like Demisse dropped big time
Mutai laid down the hammer and it's done when he was able to get rid of Biwott. Looks like April and Kebede may finish off the podium. Kebede just finished 4th in the world championship in August so great finish in such quick turnaround.
Vail likely to be top American - 13th place 2:51 behind Mutai at the 20 mile mark. Hartmann apparently dropped after 19 miles (or went really slowly - have gotten conflicting messages)

Where is Meb has he fallen off the track.Somebody said that Deba was feeling uncomfortable while in the lead and Jeptoo was trailing her waiting to strike at the right time.Demisse is she the top American female???tribe_pride wrote:Jeptoo with a strong win and Deba with a great finish even when she was passed for good. Just looked it up. Looks like her best may be 3rd in 1988 though she won the 84 Olympics and Boston twice among others.dal4018 wrote:Tribe you said that the last American born female to win was Kim Merritt ('75)what about Joan Benoit-Samuelson????

Re: NYC Marathon
Demisse was the one who was running with Deba for most of the race (Tigst Tufa Demisse). Top American female looks to be Adriana Nelson in 13th place at 2:35. Of the known Americans, Hastings looked really bad at the end in 2:42:50 as did Delilah Dicrescenzo (from the song Hey There Delilah) who also had a tough race in what also may have been her marathon debut in 2:53:40. Other American women were in between as welldal4018 wrote:Where is Meb has he fallen off the track.Somebody said that Deba was feeling uncomfortable while in the lead and Jeptoo was trailing her waiting to strike at the right time.Demisse is she the top American female???tribe_pride wrote:Jeptoo with a strong win and Deba with a great finish even when she was passed for good. Looks like Meb finished in 2:23:47 as the 5th American so he just had a rough day. Just looked and saw that it took 10 minutes to run Mile 20 and 7:31 to run Mile 21. Was between 5:30-6:30 after that so something happened right around the 20 mile mark. Hate to say it, but he is done for international competitive running. He is 38 years old.

Yeah pushing 40 your right Tribe his best days are well behind after running 2:23:47 that is a outstanding time for a female.Nelson the top American female was 12 minutes behind him!!! Waiting for Rupp to put his hat in the ring.tribe_pride wrote:Demisse was the one who was running with Deba for most of the race (Tigst Tufa Demisse).
