It starts today and ho hum another pair of Kenyans will walk away two more titles.

While Kenyans are favorites today, the last time a Kenyan man and woman won in the same year was in 2003.

Since then, Kenyan men have won in 2003,2005, 2007, 2011 and Kenyan women have won in 2003 and 2010.

Last American winners were Meb in 2009 (last natural born American was Bill Rogers in 1979 with Salazar winning in 1980-82) and Miki Gorman for the women in 1977 (last natural born was Kim Merritt in 1975). Meb is the best US chance but not much so today for the Americans

Note that last year's NYC marathon was not contested because of Hurricane Sandy so this is the first contest in 2 years

Nope - Rupp is a 5k/10k runner for now. He may move up one day but not for a bunch of years. Outside of the African countries, the top distance track guys finish their career there before moving up to the marathon because track is where they can earn more money.

America's other top other marathoner over the past few year, Ryan Hall, once again dropped out because of an injury before the race. Not sure that he has started (and at least not completed) a marathon since the US Trials for the Olympics almost 2 years ago.

Other guys you may have heard about like Dathan Ritzenhein and Matt Tegenkamp just did Chicago last month so they wouldn't be running this race.

Huge lead early on for Deba and Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia. Will be interesting to see if this strategy works well in a very windy day. Their first mile was slow too which means the wind should greatly effect the race and times should be pretty slow.

At a minimum, there are 3 Americans in the lead pack of 20 or so. Meb, Hartmann is the big oafish looking guy who has done well in the past (4th in the past 2 Boston Marathons), and Ryan Vail.

Yeah but Meb is the only one I think could pull off the trick can't wait for Rupp to eventually to sink or swim.

Jeptoo has gained about 2 minutes on her in the last 5 miles and Deba just threw up. The only question is if Jeptoo made her move too late or if Deba can get another gear going.

It's over. Jeptoo has this won. Only 15 seconds back with about 3 miles to go and Jeptoo has horrible form (but always does).

Just looked it up. Looks like her best may be 3rd in 1988 though she won the 84 Olympics and Boston twice among others.

Was between 5:30-6:30 after that so something happened right around the 20 mile mark. Hate to say it, but he is done for international competitive running. He is 38 years old.

So Samuelson lost okay thanks Dammn 38 yrs since a American female has won the NYC Marathon.I could have sworn Samuelson won it in the 80s!!!! Her best efforts in the NYC Marathon were 3rd '88 and 6th '91.She took first in the Boston and Chicago marathons.
