welcome the 60th Dem in the Senate (presuming Sen.-elect Franken is seated)

WASHINGTON - Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter announced Tuesday that he is switching parties, a move would give Democrats a filibuster-proof 60 seats if Al Franken is seated in the Minnesota race.

"I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary," the Pennsylvania senator said in a statement.
GOP is no longer a national party... they are a regional one.
Regional? You can't find anyone in this region that voted for W twice who will cop to being a republican.
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

Glee, doom, exuberance, outrage, joy, anger, happiness and hate. :D   :x :)

All these truly wonderful and opposing human emotions on display at the same time, as taps plays on the Republican party.

Nothing left but the super whack nuts, and the door is wide open for the new second party.

Who will it be.

Specter used to be indicative of an entire WING of the GOP. "Rockefeller Republicans" used to be a huge part of the GOP... they've been pushed out of the party entirely as they've pursued the "southern strategy" and embraced the evangelical right. Look at the GOP's disappearing act in the northeast... that owes itself to the GOP embracing a much more extreme right wing line favored by the evangelicals.

people as moderate as Specter have been told in the past decade that we aren't extreme enough for the modern GOP (yeah... I was in the GOP from 96-00).
He admittedly switched parties SOLELY to ensure getting reelected, because he himself stated he didn't feel he'd win the Republican primary against a conservative challenger given that he'd voted FOR the president's stimulus package. This has almost NOTHING to do with ideals, and EVERYTHING to do with ensuring he gets reelected.

Truly pathetic at every level. What a POS.
I think that is harsh. Specter has always been a moderate. I doubt if he will change the way he votes, he'll just be labeled a Dem. when he casts his vote.

If he starts flip flopping on his votes (voting for stuff that had previously voted against and visa versa) then I would agree with you.

at some point one of the two remaining factions in the GOP will wrest control from the other forcing the loser of that fight in to another party. If the evangelicals win out, the libertarians would be the logical home for the outcasts... if the libertarians win out, the constitution party is the logical home for the evangelicals. or they could continue the unholy alliance and try to get along... something tells me that as the out party that likely won't happen.

That would be it. Of course, you can apply that to most politicians, so maybe you are right.

How soon we forget....

In 2001, Specter Favored Rule Change to Discourage Mid-Session Party-Switching

When Jim Jeffords became an "Independent" in 2001, Specter wasn't happy. He said, "I intend to propose a rule change which would preclude a future recurrence of a Senator's change in parties, in midsession, organizing with the opposition, to cause the upheaval which is now resulting."

http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/T ... rule_c.asp

More proof that Specter is a POS that only care about himself.
