I know regular people in my grandparents generation who used words like "colored", "darkies" and "nigger" and it wasn't considered racist. Why did that stop? They didn't mean it a bad way.CID1990 wrote:Im still trying to figure why everybody is hyperventilating about this now

Mabye they should do what Colgate did and just alter the name. After all, Darkie became Darlie in the 1990s. But in Chinese, still means, " Black People Toothpaste."

I was confused as to why they'd strip the trademark off of something that a Native America created.
Keep the logo.
Create a roundtable with Native American leaders to see if there is a way to keep the Redskins name - setting up a foundation for scholarships or something.
Seems relatively simple (though I realize it isn't *that simple) to me.

Re: Redskins stripped of trademarks:
The point is that although there are people who are legitimately offended by the name (and for that reason I have no problem with them changing it), they make up a tiny, tiny percentage of the people who are making noise about it. If you aren't a Native American then it is fine to protest the name as offensive, but all the dramatics are unnecessary and quite frankly, make people look like assholes. I am referring specifically to people like Harry Reid and that knucklhead on MSNBC who suddenly cannot say the word and must warn viewers that they might be triggered by its use. Give me an effing break. one year ago these people didn't give two sh!ts about the name.89Hen wrote:I know regular people in my grandparents generation who used words like "colored", "darkies" and "n*****" and it wasn't considered racist. The song that a lot of ice cream trucks use has some pretty racially insensitive lyrics. Ban it. Context doesn't matter.

I mean, it doesn't matter that mascots are things that are respected and/or revered, either. Context doesn't matter.
And on that note, let's condemn rap lyrics that use the n-word. Context doesn't matter.

I know that other people are sensitive about this kind of thing but quite frankly, I think as a whole we have become so hypersensitive to things like this to the point of absurdity. But I'm not a native American so I won't presume to think for them. If they are special flowers who wilt at being insulted then I'm all for getting rid of the name.Skjellyfetti wrote:Do you really think that the Redskins fans and organization "respects" and "reveres" the Native American community?Pwns wrote: I mean, it doesn't matter that mascots are things that are respected and/or revered, either![]()
Personally, as 100% Scot descended from the scions to two different Scottish diasporas, and of a clan that is known to have been descended from an intermingling of Picts and Norse raiders- I would LOVE to have my ancestors depicted as bloodthristy savages who would rip your throat out through the back of your head.
But that's just me
