Oh, so they can't comment on potential transfers, but they can offer a student-athlete who's under scholarship from another school? I can see why everyone hates Oregon. I just hope VA can see past the smoke they're blowing up his ass to get him as an insurance policy. This entire situation is fuckin' crooked.dbackjon wrote:Offered a Scholarship

CHENEY, Wash. (AP) -- Eastern Washington's record-setting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. says he has received a scholarship offer from Oregon and will visit the school this weekend.
Adams told The Spokesman-Review on Wednesday that he will fly to Eugene, Oregon, on Friday and return Sunday.
The strong-armed Adams, who will be a senior next season, owns nearly every major passing record at Eastern Washington, a perennial FCS power. He would be seeking to replace Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.
Dave Williford, a spokesman for the Oregon football team, says he cannot comment on any potential player transfers.

Wow.
SE, this is just the P5 flexing their muscles. They take what they want, when they want, how they want, everyone else be damned.
Other thought that comes to mind: If he doesn't take the offer how does his team view these moves? It's going to be hard for him to say "I really never wanted to leave" after going on a visit.

I'm sure every kid 18-22 would jump at the opportunity if they were guaranteed a starting job, so I think they'd understand. Regardless, those fucks trying to steal away our QB is only going to pour gasoline into the fight when we play them. I hope we take cheap shots at their star players in the game.SDHornet wrote:Wow.

Has there ever been a FCS to FBS transfer that made an impact? Adams has already shown he can light up Pac-12 defenses with FCS talent, it'd be interesting to see what he could do with the arsenal the Ducks have returning.

Seriously, he is simply transferring...just like any other transfer. Are all transfers unethical, or just the ones that impact your team?
Even more in Adam's favor...the guy is graduating. He's been a good student (if one accepts that graduating students are good students)...so he played football and school by the rules, and gave as much as he got by the terms of his contract.
He owes EWU nothing.
The guy has a chance to go to a bigger stage...and get more money for his last year of school, so why get upset? This is the American dream, especially for a showboat player. Funny how EWU fans loved Adam's cockiness and affinity for wanting to play on the big stage, and most EWU fans also like their team playing on the big stage, but when the kid gets an opportunity to actually play more often on a big stage, all the EWU fans get their panties in a bunch and say the kid should not be able to pursue his dreams.
Keeping the little man down and cooped up doesn't sound very progressive.
Unethical? Next time, put a bigger buy out clause in the player's contract.

FCS should not be a farm system for FBS and this is not good for our subdivision. Oregon is like an NFL scout in this situation, making promises and talking the kid up so they can get him into fall camp and see if he MIGHT compete for a starting job. The fact we play Oregon next September adds to how wrong this is.
Swing and a miss.

Adams is a grown man - he's been recruited before - he knows what he's walking into if he decides to transfer to the Ducks. Maybe he wins the job & leads them back to the playoffs & he goes to NYC as a Heisman finalist. On the other hand, maybe he gets beat out & at best gets garbage time.
I'm sure Adams will make the best decision for himself, whether that's going to Oregon or staying put.
As for the rule, I see no problem with it - if a kid is good enough to play at the next level and he's already got his diploma why shouldn't he be allowed? I'd be curious to hear a rational argument against it....

Nothing unethical about it...just another kid getting recruited. If anything, Adams is more educated about the recruitment process than any wide eyed freshman, so he is in a much better position to make a decision.

Re: Vernon Adams to Oregon?
My take:
if I'm Adams - if i think I can earn the starting job then I do it. I assume he wants to play in the NFL, well if he can't win the starting job in the fall at Oregon he's not going to be a NFL QB.
If he stays at EWU there will be questions about his comepetition - same thing all FCS players face, not to mention his height - 6'. However, if he transfers & win the job, he's talked about on every network all fall& his draft stock goes up appreciably.
Again though it's his call.

FCS should not be a farm system for FBS? Why not? What is best for the kid? Should high school football teams be farm systems for...uh...students...for FBS or FCS colleges? Should FCS schools be farm systems for the NFL, or should we tell our players that they won't be going to the pros because we have different standards? Of should we tell a kid that he might have a better shot at the pros if he plays on a smaller FCS team for a couple years instead of competing against the best at FBS teams and having to subsequently sit on the bench for a couple years before showing off his stuff?
No one should be guaranteed a starting position...they should all compete for playing time. Adams, if he thinks he is good enough, should give it a shot if he wants to see how he measures up. Cripes, EWU people were saying he could start on most FBS teams, so now those same fans are saying Adams should stay at EWU because he won't win a starting position? If he sits on the bench, it is because he isn't good enough...same with any other recruit anywhere. But at least he will have tried...just like any other kid who transfers to any other school...or any other kid coming out of high school to college.
The fact that Oregon is on the schedule has no bearing on the issue. None.
Maybe EWU shouldn't be so eager to play up in the future if they are worried one of their stars will be poached.
As for what is bad for FCS...everyone saw this kind of thing coming from a mile away once the Power 5 said they were going to offer scholarship + other expenses. The extra $3-5K per year will impact some of the transfers that used to come down...and it will certainly impact a few of the players who are on the borderline when getting recruited straight out of high school. Who will blame a kid for getting extra meal money, extra fluff money?
Blame the lawyers...blame the damned selfish kids for wanting more. How dare they!

He's graduating early. He's free to go wherever he pleases. Applaud him for graduating early. He'll get a degree in 3 years plus playing football. I got mine in 5.5 and didn't play a sport.

Gotta say SE's change of face when it came out he was offered a scholarship was priceless.
That said, I hope he doesn't go to Oregon because I like Oregon, and cheering for that piece of shit would be the worst.

Sucks for EWU, but he did graduate.
What is worrisome is if the one-year sitout for regular transfers to FBS is eliminated - you will see this as a regular occurance
