Legislators in 27 states have introduced bills to enact or expand programs that would fund K-12 students as opposed to institutions. As of this writing, seven of these states—Iowa, Arizona, Missouri, Indiana, Kansas, South Dakota, and West Virginia—have already passed school choice legislation out of a chamber, and five others—Florida, Georgia, Montana, Idaho, and Oklahoma—have passed bills out of at least one committee.

Interesting idea - fund the student vs the obviously failing, school system. Granted - there will be plenty of children that will continue to fall behind and fail to become academically proficient in basic math, grammar, etc... but giving the power (and money) to the individual to decide what is best for their family is interesting.
Of course, this opens up tax dollars being used for religious education(unless specifically restricted and we all know that the Red states doing this won't place those restrictions) and people will have qualms with that.
We already fund students directly when it comes to Pell Grants and the GI Bill for higher education. The same goes for taxpayer-funded pre-K programs such as Head Start. Food stamps and Medicaid funding similarly go to families who have a choice of where they want to spend their grocery and health care budgets.

We should apply the same logic to K-12 education and fund students, not systems.
I do find it difficult to argue against that logic. :coffee:
Agreed...but why is this in the China Virus thread?

The funny part about those still calling it a China virus is they tend to be the same ones who willingly let the Trojan horse remain in the castle.

 Nice Gil!

I know you're poking fun at the xenophobes who call it the China virus but I don't think it's the right way to go about doing it. If China virus is racist than so is Limey or UK variant, Brazilian variant, etc. I think SD calls it the China virus to get a rise out of people and his motivation isn't really that different than yours in calling it the Limey variant.

Limey is more racist than China. Limey is derogatory towards my ancestors, China is a country, as are UK and Brazil.

So are you saying that both sides don't do it (i.e. calling it the Limey or UK variant isn't racist) or that bigotry toward people of European descent is OK?

I would argue that the track record of Chinese imperialism and oppression toward people they felt were inferior to them dwarves that of western nations. The Chinese were experts when the Germanic and Celtic tribes were trying to hold off Roman legions. So I'll ask again why is China virus racist and bad while UK or Brazilian variant isn't?

Sigh........

I knew where you were trying to go.

My point is that if you call it the China virus you’re most likely doing it to troll (SD here), or think it was a coordinated attack on the US by the Chinese government. In the latter case, you should be the type who wears masks and socially distances so we don’t let the fuckers get away with it. Sadly that’s mostly not the case.

The third option is simple racism.

Calling it the UK variant is more acceptable because no one is truly concerned about the racial oppression suffered by the Brits. I could complain about the appropriation of my Viking heritage or whine about the unfairness of being a middle aged, white male too.

I’m not saying in a perfect world you are necessarily wrong. You just missed the point of my sarcastic remark.

Just as "no one is truly concerned about the racial oppression suffered by the Brits", I'm not concerned, truly or otherwise, about the racial oppression suffered by the Chinese in China either. They're the oppressors there and only a fool or lickspittle doesn't acknowledge that.

I think racism in the US towards people of Asian descent is wrong and absolutely oppose it. This virus is not their fault and they shouldn't be or even feel threatened by others because of their ancestry.

That doesn't mean I'm going to let the Chinese government off the hook for the shoddy procedures that allowed this virus to escape the lab. I'm also going to call them out for their successful use of social media and politicians who they've bought and paid for to manipulate the gullible on this and other issues like the Uyghurs.

Defending Asian-Americans in the US is noble and very worthwhile, defending the CCP and China isn't.

And you're as good at sarcasm as AZ is at analogies ... :coffee:

Been doing the funeral thing this week. Very discouraging to see how predictable the situation is. I know who is who. Very predictable as to who is making an effort to cooperate in controlling the situation and who is not. So many people who don't appear to understand that it's about giving a crap about other people.

Random stats:

As of a few minutes ago, based on the Wordometers site:

The average deaths per million population for red (voted Trump) states is 1558.
The average deaths per million population for blue (voted Biden) states is 1472.

Just posting that because I keep seeing people say it is "blue state" problem.

Going out on a limb there. ;)

FWIW, I heard a stat today that the only racial group less likely to be killed by a member of their own race are Asians. They are more likely to be killed by blacks. Can't find a study, but will keep looking.

I don't think it's a blue or red state problem JSO. I'm not sure many do. If anything I see more people saying blue states are too locked down, which should lead to fewer deaths, but your numbers there are practically a push.

But, FWIW Top 4 are Blue, 6 of top 7. Top 2 have more deaths than the bottom 30 states.
